Hulhumale island guide for Malaysians: the airport city island

Your flight lands late, leaves early or you want a cheap first night, and Hulhumale keeps coming up.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Hulhumale is a reclaimed city island linked by road to Velana airport and Male, about 10 minutes from arrivals by taxi at a regulated MVR 80 to 85. It has a long public beach, a designated swimwear area, cafes, supermarkets and ATMs, but it is a city, not an island holiday. Most Malaysians use it for one night before or after a transfer, especially after the Batik Air evening arrival or before an early flight home.

Hulhumale is a reclaimed island next to Velana International Airport, built as a new city for Male. It is joined to the airport and Male by road, so it feels more like Putrajaya by the sea than a fishing village.

For Malaysians, it mostly solves a timing problem. This profile explains when it helps, what it is like and who should skip it. For the bigger picture of island types, see the local islands beginner guide and the island directory.

What kind of island is Hulhumale?

Hulhumale is part of Male City, not a local village island and not a resort. It has apartment blocks, a central park, a long beach and promenade, mosques, supermarkets, banks and many cafes.

It is split into Phase 1 (the older, beach-facing side with most guesthouses) and Phase 2 (newer, closer to the bridge). Taxi fares differ slightly between the two.

The beach is pleasant for a walk or a swim, but there is no notable house reef for snorkelling from shore. Swimwear is allowed only in a designated area; elsewhere cover shoulders and knees. The Ministry of Tourism has also agreed with the housing developer HDC to build a dedicated tourist beach in Phase 1, though we could not confirm whether it is finished.

When does a Hulhumale night make sense?

Getting there in brief

A taxi from arrivals takes about 10 minutes and the regulated fare is MVR 80 to Phase 1 and MVR 85 to Phase 2 for a normal car, set by the Ministry of Transport from 20 May 2024. RTL buses run about every 30 minutes for a small fare. Many hotels also offer pickup.

The full breakdown of options, night arrivals and fares is in how to get to Hulhumale from Male airport.

Who does Hulhumale suit?

  • Good fit: late arrivals, early departures, families wanting a calm first night, and travellers needing ATMs, a pharmacy or a supermarket before heading out.
  • Reasonable fit: budget travellers who want a cheap extra night and a beach walk.
  • Weaker fit: honeymooners and anyone who wants their holiday base to feel like the Maldives of the brochures.

If you want a local-island stay close to the airport but with a village feel and a bikini beach, Maafushi is the usual next step.

Where to stay

Hulhumale has many guesthouses and city hotels, from simple rooms to upscale business hotels. Names travellers often see include Hotel Jen, Beach Arena Inn and Ocean Grand. Our Hulhumale accommodation guide explains how to shortlist one for your flight times.

Services Malaysians ask about

  • Money: Bank of Maldives and State Bank of India ATMs. You need some Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR) for buses and local ferries; USD is widely accepted elsewhere.
  • Food: many local cafes and restaurants; no alcohol or pork outside licensed tourist facilities.
  • Prayer: mosques across the island; services pause around Friday midday prayers.
  • SIM cards: buy at the airport before you leave arrivals.
  • Entry: the IMUGA declaration is free and must be filed within 96 hours before arrival.

Things to do with a spare day

A spare afternoon is easy to fill: the beach and promenade, the central park, a cheap ferry or bus into Male, or a half-day snorkel or sandbank trip with a local operator. See what to do on Hulhumale for the options and reported prices.

When another choice works better

If you have a full day spare at the start or end of your trip, a nearby local island or a resort day may suit you better than a second Hulhumale night. If your flights connect, skip Hulhumale and spend that night on your island instead.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need to stay in Hulhumale at all?
Only if your flight times do not connect with your transfer. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals usually reach a resort or nearby local island the same day. Batik Air lands at about 21:55, after seaplanes and most shared speedboats stop, so a Hulhumale night is the practical choice.
Is Hulhumale halal-friendly for Malaysians?
Yes, in the everyday sense. Hulhumale is part of a Muslim city with no alcohol or pork sold in local restaurants, mosques nearby and prayer times observed. Food at local cafes is prepared to local Muslim norms. Hotels may still have their own policies, so ask if you need certification.
Can I walk from Hulhumale to the airport?
It is close but not a pleasant walk with luggage, and the road is built for vehicles. A taxi takes about 10 minutes and many hotels offer a shuttle. Ask your hotel to book an early taxi the night before a morning flight.
Is Hulhumale safe at night?
Hulhumale is a planned residential area with wide streets and a busy beachfront in the evening. Use normal city sense. Keep valuables close, use licensed taxis or apps and agree the fare first. Families often enjoy the promenade after sunset when it is cooler.
