Huraa guesthouses and accommodation: how to choose

You have picked Huraa and now need to choose between a dozen small guesthouses that look alike online.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Huraa has about 16 guesthouses, mostly with under 15 rooms. Named options include Pearl Sands at Huraa beside the bikini beach, Sea Breeze View with a pool, Silver Oasis and Green Villa with 12 rooms each, and smaller places such as Kanbulo House and Mangrove Inn Hura. Choose on location to the bikini beach, what the rate includes and how the guesthouse handles transfers, rather than photos alone.

Worth knowing

  • The public ferry does not run on Fridays and the return leaves Huraa early in the morning
  • Bank of Maldives opened an ATM on Huraa in May 2025; small shops and boat crews still prefer cash
  • A small health centre handles minor issues; serious cases go to Male

Getting there from Male airport

  • shared speedboat: about 20 to 30 minutesReported at about USD 20 to 35 per person one way (aMaldives and Ummi Goes Where). Confirm with your guesthouse
  • public ferry: about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutesMVR 22 per person, cash, bought at the counter (Ummi Goes Where, Dec 2024)

Huraa has about 16 small guesthouses, and the right choice depends on three things: how close you want to be to the bikini beach, whether you need a pool, and what is included in the rate.

This page lists named properties and gives a simple shortlist rule. It does not rate them. For the island overview, see the Huraa island guide, and browse the island directory for neighbours.

Which guesthouses are on Huraa?

Twelve of the roughly 16 properties are named in the aMaldives island listing, checked 12 October 2026. Room counts and prices appear only where the listing gives them.

The from-prices are listing figures with no stated tax basis or dates, so treat them as a rough guide only. A Malaysian traveller also reported Courtyard Guesthouse at USD 50 per night with breakfast in October 2024, and rooms on the island from about USD 30.

How should you choose?

Use a simple decision rule based on who is travelling.

  1. Families with young children: choose a property with a pool or direct beach access, ground-floor rooms and an extra bed option. Sea Breeze View and Silver Oasis fit this on paper.
  2. Couples: pay a little more for a sea-view room close to the bikini beach, such as Pearl Sands or another beach-side property.
  3. Budget travellers: a small village guesthouse with breakfast included, paid in US dollars cash, gives the lowest total.
  4. Divers and surfers: pick a guesthouse that works closely with a dive centre or surf operator so equipment and boat times are easy.
  5. Older travellers: prioritise a short walk from the jetty and help with luggage.

Then compare your shortlist on the full price for your dates, not the headline rate.

What should the rate include?

Most Huraa guesthouses include breakfast. Beyond that, inclusions vary a lot, so check these before you book:

  • Service charge of 10% and Tourism GST of 17%
  • Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night
  • Airport transfer, and whether it is shared or private
  • Lunch and dinner, or half board options
  • Wi-Fi, filtered drinking water and towels for the beach
  • Any card surcharge

A rate that looks USD 15 cheaper can end up costing more once taxes and transfers are added. Our Huraa cost guide shows a full worked budget.

Questions to send before you book

Send these by WhatsApp or email and keep the replies.

  • What is the total price for our dates, with all taxes?
  • How far is the room from the bikini beach, in minutes on foot?
  • Which transfer do you arrange, and at what time for our flight?
  • Do you have a family room or extra bed, and what does it cost?
  • Which trips do you run, and what are the group prices?
  • What is your cancellation policy?

Fast, clear replies are a good sign. A guesthouse that cannot answer basic questions in writing may be harder to deal with on the island.

Booking and payment tips

Many small guesthouses prefer US dollars cash on arrival, and some add a surcharge for cards. Huraa has had a Bank of Maldives ATM since May 2025, but bring enough dollars for your stay.

Your accommodation must be confirmed and prepaid or guaranteed for immigration. Keep the confirmation on your phone for arrival. Read how Green Tax is charged at guesthouses if your quote leaves it out.

When is a guesthouse not the right choice?

A Huraa guesthouse suits travellers who are happy with simple rooms and want local life and low costs. If you want a private pool, a spa, alcohol or room service, a resort fits better, and several sit nearby in North Male.

Some travellers combine the two: three nights on Huraa, then one or two nights at a resort. Compare nearby Himmafushi if Huraa's rooms are full for your dates.

Questions travellers ask

Should I book direct or through a booking site?
Both work. Booking sites make comparison easy and often show the total with taxes. Booking direct by WhatsApp or email can make it easier to bundle transfers and trips and ask questions. Whichever you use, get the final price for your dates in writing, including service charge, GST and Green Tax.
Are Huraa guesthouses suitable for Muslim travellers?
Huraa is a Muslim local island, and guesthouse kitchens do not serve pork or alcohol. Ask the guesthouse about your specific needs, such as prayer direction in the room or meal timing during Ramadan. Small family-run properties are usually flexible when asked in advance.
Do guesthouses on Huraa have family rooms?
Some do, and many offer extra beds. Room sizes vary widely between properties, so ask for the maximum occupancy, bed configuration and any extra bed charge. Remember each child over 2 also pays USD 6 Green Tax per night.
Is there a hotel licence I can check?
Maldives immigration asks visitors for a confirmed booking at a registered tourist property, so check this before you pay. Ask the guesthouse for its registered name and confirm it matches your booking confirmation and the address you enter on the IMUGA declaration. If the names differ, ask why before you travel.
