The budget room sits between two reports from the same Malaysian traveller: rooms "as low as USD 30", and Courtyard Guesthouse at USD 50 with breakfast in October 2024. Treat it as optimistic, especially in December to April. The comfort case uses the top of the 2026 guesthouse band.

What moves the number most?

Who this budget suits

These numbers suit couples and friends sharing a room. Solo travellers pay the full room alone, which roughly doubles the per-person room cost. Families should add Green Tax and transfer seats for each child over 2.

If your budget per person is above about RM 6,000, a mid-range resort package may give better value for a honeymoon.

How to read a Huraa quotation

When a guesthouse or agent sends a price, check the basis before you compare it with this page. A quote of USD 60 might be per room or per person, with or without breakfast, and with or without tax.

Ask four things:

  • Is the price per room per night, and for how many people?
  • Does it include 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST?
  • Is Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night included?
  • Are transfers included, and are they shared speedboat or ferry?

Once you have those answers, rebuild the quote in the same table format used above. That makes it easy to see whether a package is genuinely cheaper or just quoted on a different basis.

Some Malaysian agents sell 4D3N local-island packages with transfers and some trips bundled. These can be good value, but check the island named in the package, the room category and whether flights are included before comparing them with a do-it-yourself budget.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Travel outside December to April and outside Malaysian school holidays.
  • Take the public ferry one way if your flight times allow it.
  • Share a larger room or a family room with friends.
  • Book one or two group trips rather than private charters.
  • Eat at local cafes for lunch and keep Western meals for a treat.

Questions travellers ask

Is Huraa cheaper than Maafushi?
Room prices sit in a similar guesthouse band. Huraa's transfer can be very cheap on the public ferry, and the shared speedboat is reported in a similar range to Maafushi's. Maafushi has more competition for tours, so trip prices there can be a little lower. The difference over four nights is usually small compared with flights.
Does the room rate include taxes?
Often not. Many guesthouses quote a base rate and add 10% service charge, 17% Tourism GST and USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night. Some booking sites show everything in one total. Ask for the final amount for your dates before comparing two properties.
Should I pay in US dollars or rufiyaa?
US dollars in small notes cover most guesthouse bills, speedboats and trips. Rufiyaa is useful for the public ferry and small shops. Huraa has had a Bank of Maldives ATM since May 2025, but carry enough cash for a few days in case it is empty.
How much do children add?
Under 2s are exempt from Green Tax. Older children pay USD 6 per night at guesthouses, plus their transfer seat and any extra bed charge. A family of two adults and a 6-year-old adds USD 24 Green Tax over four nights, and one more speedboat seat each way.
