How to get to Huraa from Male airport

You know your KUL flight time and need to work out which boat gets you to Huraa the same day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Most Malaysians reach Huraa by shared speedboat in about 20 to 30 minutes, at a reported USD 20 to 35 per person one way, booked through the guesthouse. The MTCC public ferry costs MVR 22 and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from Male, but runs once a day in the afternoon and not on Fridays. Late Batik Air arrivals need a private boat or a night in Hulhumale.

Good for

  • couples on a budget
  • short first local-island trips close to the airport
  • surfers in season

Worth knowing

  • The public ferry does not run on Fridays and the return leaves Huraa early in the morning
  • Bank of Maldives opened an ATM on Huraa in May 2025; small shops and boat crews still prefer cash
  • A small health centre handles minor issues; serious cases go to Male

Getting there from Male airport

  • shared speedboat: about 20 to 30 minutesReported at about USD 20 to 35 per person one way (aMaldives and Ummi Goes Where). Confirm with your guesthouse
  • public ferry: about 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutesMVR 22 per person, cash, bought at the counter (Ummi Goes Where, Dec 2024)

The easiest way from Velana airport to Huraa is a shared speedboat, about 20 to 30 minutes, arranged by your guesthouse. The public ferry is the cheapest option at MVR 22, but it runs once a day and never on Fridays.

Times and fares here are reported by travel guides and checked 12 October 2026. Always reconfirm with your guesthouse. For the island itself, see the Huraa island guide, and for the wider island directory.

Which transfer options reach Huraa?

Three options, with very different costs.

OptionTimeReported fareRuns
Shared speedboatAbout 20 to 30 minAbout USD 20 to 35 pp one waySeveral a day, via guesthouse
Public ferry, MTCC route 308About 1h10 to 1h30 from MaleMVR 22 ppOnce a day, not Fridays
Private speedboatAbout 30 to 40 minAbout USD 100 to 160 per boat; from about USD 200 on FridaysAny time, on request

Route 308 links Male with Himmafushi, Huraa, Thulusdhoo and Dhiffushi. Sources disagree on the Male departure (14:30 or 15:30), and one older listing says it also skips Mondays. The return leaves Huraa at about 08:00.

Which boat fits your flight from Malaysia?

Match your arrival time to the boat. KUL flights take about 4h15 to 4h25, and the Maldives is 3 hours behind Malaysia.

FlightLands Male (local)Best option
AirAsiaAbout 09:50Shared speedboat late morning, or the afternoon ferry if you are happy to wait
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25Shared speedboat early afternoon, or the afternoon ferry
Batik AirAbout 21:55Private speedboat, or a night in Hulhumale and a morning boat

Arrivals after about 16:00 usually miss the last ferry and may miss the last shared boat. The sample flight times are from an October 2026 schedule and change by season.

How does the public ferry work in practice?

Expect two legs and some waiting.

  1. Take the airport ferry to Male, reported at MVR 15 and about 15 minutes, running every 10 to 30 minutes.
  2. Go to the MTCC ferry terminal in Male. Buy a ticket at the counter in cash.
  3. Board route 308. Huraa is the second stop after Himmafushi.
  4. Your guesthouse meets you at Huraa harbour.

This suits backpackers and patient travellers with light bags. Families with young children or older relatives usually find the speedboat worth the extra cost.

Read how to plan around public ferry schedules and what to check about Friday services before you rely on it.

What does the transfer cost for two people?

Return transfer cost for two adults, using RM 4.09 per USD and MVR 22 per ferry ticket:

ChoiceArithmeticApprox total
Ferry both waysMVR 22 x 2 people x 2 trips = MVR 88 (about USD 6)About RM 25
Shared speedboat both waysUSD 25 x 4 seats = USD 100About RM 409
Private speedboat both waysUSD 130 x 2 trips = USD 260About RM 1,063

The speedboat case uses the middle of the reported USD 20 to 35 range. For three or more travellers, a private boat starts to compete with shared seats.

Who should choose which option?

  • Budget travellers with time: ferry in, speedboat out if your flight is early.
  • Couples and families: shared speedboat both ways.
  • Groups of four or more, or late arrivals: private speedboat.
  • Friday arrivals: speedboat only.

If transfers worry you, a closer island such as Himmafushi on the same route is a similar trip. Our guide to choosing speedboat or public ferry covers the general trade-off.

How do you book the speedboat?

Ask your guesthouse when you confirm the room. Most Huraa guesthouses arrange the shared speedboat for you, meet you in the arrivals hall or at the airport jetty, and add the fare to your bill or collect it in US dollars on arrival.

Send your flight number and arrival time with the booking. If your flight is delayed, message the guesthouse on WhatsApp so they can move you to a later boat.

Operators named for this route include Sea Shine Speedboat and MA Marine. Check who runs your boat and the meeting point the day before you fly.

What to check before you lock in the transfer

Use this short checklist when you message the guesthouse.

  • The exact boat time on your arrival day, and the next boat if your flight runs late.
  • Whether the fare is per person or per boat, one way or return.
  • Whether the price changes on Fridays or public holidays.
  • Where the crew meets you at Velana, and who to call if you cannot find them.
  • The return boat time, and how early it reaches the airport.
  • Whether payment is cash, card or added to the room bill.

Clear answers on these six points remove most of the stress from a local-island transfer. If a guesthouse cannot confirm them, that is a useful signal when you compare properties.

What happens if the weather turns?

Speedboats and ferries can be delayed or cancelled in rough seas, more often in the southwest monsoon from about May to November. Huraa is close to the airport, so delays are usually short.

Leave a buffer on your departure day. A morning boat for an evening flight is safer than a boat that lands you at the airport with an hour to spare. If a boat is cancelled, your guesthouse normally rebooks the next one.

Questions travellers ask

Where does the public ferry to Huraa leave from?
The ferry leaves from Male city, not the airport. First take the airport ferry across to Male, reported at MVR 15 and about 15 minutes, then walk or take a taxi to the ferry terminal. Sources name the terminal differently, so ask your guesthouse which jetty to use and show the driver the route number 308.
Can I pay the ferry by card?
Plan on cash. Travellers report buying public ferry tickets at the counter in Male in rufiyaa. Speedboats arranged through guesthouses are usually paid in US dollars, sometimes added to your room bill. Carry small US dollar notes and some rufiyaa from the airport.
How much luggage can I bring on the boat?
Speedboats and ferries accept normal suitcases, and crew load them for you. The airport ferry allows three free bags per passenger, with extra bags reported at MVR 10 each. If you carry diving or surf gear, tell the guesthouse when you book the speedboat.
What if my return flight is early in the morning?
The public ferry leaves Huraa at about 08:00, which is too late for an early flight and does not run on Fridays. Book a shared or private speedboat that reaches the airport at least three hours before departure, or spend your last night in Hulhumale.
