Huraa gives you a bikini beach, a mangrove you can paddle through and quick boat access to North Male's reefs and surf breaks. Three or four days is enough to do the highlights without rushing.

Prices below are reported by travel guides and a Malaysian traveller between 2022 and 2026, so treat them as planning figures and confirm on the island. For an overview of the island, read the Huraa island guide, or browse the island directory.

Where can you swim on Huraa?

The designated bikini beach is on the northern side, with soft white sand and clear water. Swimwear is fine there. One guide places it beside the Pearl Sands guesthouse, which charges non-guests a fee to use its section.

Coconut Beach on the east side is quieter, and the western lagoon side is noted for snorkelling. Away from the bikini beach, local custom expects swimming fully clothed.

There are no lifeguards. Keep young children close and check the current before swimming off the beach.

Why is the mangrove worth your time?

Huraa has a protected mangrove area on its north side, unusual for a Maldivian island, which works as a bird sanctuary. You can kayak through it, watch herons and other birds, look for crabs and see fruit bats in the evening.

It is calm, shaded water, so it suits families, older travellers and anyone who is not a strong swimmer. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.

Water sports prices come from aMaldives. Resort day pass prices come from Ummi Goes Where (December 2024), naming resorts such as Club Med Kani and Cinnamon Dhonveli.

Snorkel safaris, dolphin cruises, sandbank picnics and evening handline fishing are also widely offered. Their prices vary by group size, so ask two operators for a quote.

Diving and surfing near Huraa

Operators named on Huraa include Dive and Sail, Other Divers (PADI courses), Zenith Adventures, SeaCrew Maldives and Huraa Watersports and Excursions. Popular sites include Manta Point and Banana Reef.

Huraa sits near well-known North Male surf breaks such as Cokes, Chickens, Sultans, Honkeys and Jailbreaks, all reached by boat. The main surf season runs roughly March to November.

Beginners should book lessons rather than paddle out alone, since many of these breaks are over shallow reef.

How to book trips safely

Book through your guesthouse or an operator with a shop near the harbour, and agree the price, duration and number of stops before you go. Ask whether snorkel gear, life jackets, water and lunch are included.

For diving, ask to see the operator's PADI or SSI affiliation and check that equipment is in good order. For surf trips, confirm which break you are going to and whether a guide stays with the group.

Pay after the details are clear, and ask for a written receipt. Group trips are far cheaper than private charters, so ask when the next shared departure is before paying for a private boat.

Free things to do

  • Walk the village and harbour at sunset.
  • Spend a slow afternoon at the bikini beach.
  • Watch fishing boats come in and see local life between prayer times.
  • Stargaze on a clear night away from guesthouse lights.

A simple 3-day plan

Day 1: arrive, settle in, afternoon at the bikini beach.

Day 2: morning snorkel or dolphin trip, late afternoon mangrove kayak.

Day 3: resort day pass, or a dive or surf session, then a harbour sunset.

This plan uses about USD 200 to 300 per person in trips, depending on whether you add a resort day. Our Huraa cost guide shows how that fits a full budget.

Who will enjoy Huraa's activities most?

Couples and families who like calm water and nature will find enough here. Surfers in season have some of the best-known breaks in the country nearby.

If you want a wider choice of tours, nightlife-style beach cafes or whale shark trips, Maafushi or South Ari islands offer more. Photographers should read our note on local-island etiquette for photographers.

Questions travellers ask

Can children join the snorkel trips?
Usually yes, if they swim confidently and wear a life jacket. Operators set their own age limits, so ask before you pay. For small children, the shallow water at the bikini beach and a glass-calm sandbank trip are easier than open-water snorkel stops with current.
Do I need to be certified to dive?
No. A Discover Scuba session lets beginners dive with an instructor, and full PADI courses run on the island. Certified divers should bring their card and logbook. Allow 24 hours between your last dive and your flight home.
Can I see manta rays from Huraa?
Guides list Manta Point in North Male as a dive site, with the best chances roughly December to April. Sightings depend on season and conditions and are never guaranteed. Ask the dive centre how recent sightings have been before booking a manta-focused trip.
What should women wear for kayaking and boat trips?
On boat trips away from the island, swimwear is generally accepted. In the mangrove and around the village, cover shoulders and knees. A rash guard with leggings works well for Muslim women and also protects from sunburn.
