The short verdict
Both islands are an easy hop from Velana airport, which makes either a good fit for a short trip from Malaysia. The real difference is how busy you want your island to be.
Maafushi is lively, with the biggest choice of guesthouses and excursions. Dhiffushi is smaller and calmer, in North Male Atoll, with fewer visitors and a slower pace.
This page belongs to the comparisons and trade-offs hub. For island detail, read the Dhiffushi travel guide.

Flight-by-flight arrival table
Use this to see how each Malaysian nonstop flight connects. Times are Maldives local time.
| Flight | Lands about | Maafushi | Dhiffushi |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirAsia | 09:50 | Late-morning speedboat | Reported 11:30 speedboat on many days |
| Malaysia Airlines | 11:25 | Midday or afternoon speedboat | Afternoon speedboat, often 16:30 |
| Batik Air | 21:55 | Late speedboats may run, confirm | Some evening boats on certain days only |
Dhiffushi times come from A Social Nomad's reported timetable, which varies by weekday. On a Batik Air arrival, a night in Hulhumale is the safe plan for Dhiffushi.
Transfer cost for two, worked out
Return transfers for two adults:
- Maafushi speedboat: USD 25 × 2 × 2 = USD 100, about RM409 at RM4.09.
- Dhiffushi speedboat: USD 45 to 50 × 2 × 2 = USD 180 to 200, about RM736 to RM818.
- Dhiffushi by public ferry: 22 MVR × 2 × 2 = 88 MVR, a few ringgit, plus the airport to Male ferry.
The ferry is the cheapest option of all, but it takes over two hours and does not run on Fridays. It suits backpackers, not families with large bags.
What staying on each island feels like
On Maafushi, you share the island with many guesthouses and day-trippers. Excursions go out all day, and there is a cafe on most corners.
On Dhiffushi, the island is calmer and life follows local routines. Visitors spend more time on the beach and the house reef, and join a few organised trips.
Both are Muslim communities. Cover shoulders and knees away from the bikini beach, and expect services to pause around Friday midday prayers.
Getting home without stress
Your last boat matters as much as your first. Ask your guesthouse for the speedboat time on your departure day before you book flights home.
Travel guides report the Dhiffushi public ferry back to Male leaving at 06:30, arriving about 08:40. That can suit an afternoon flight home, but check your return flight time and allow room in case the ferry is late.
Speedboats from Dhiffushi run at varying times. If none fits your flight, a final night in Hulhumale removes the risk.
For Maafushi, frequent speedboats make the trip home simpler. Still allow at least three hours between the boat landing at the airport and your flight.
Excursions and day trips
Maafushi has the widest choice of trips near Male. Sandbank visits, snorkelling, fishing and resort day passes are sold all over the island.
Dhiffushi offers fewer operators, so trips are mostly arranged through guesthouses. Snorkelling, sandbank trips and resort visits in North Male Atoll are the common options.
Ask what is included in each trip, such as equipment, lunch and the resort's day-pass fee. Prices are often quoted per person, with a minimum number of guests.
When each island makes more sense
Maafushi makes more sense if you land in the evening, want a busy social base or plan an excursion every day. It is also the cheapest speedboat ride.
Dhiffushi makes more sense if you land in the morning and want a quieter island without a long boat ride. It also suits a two-island trip with a resort in North Male Atoll.
If your quiet island can be further away, compare Maafushi versus Fulidhoo. For a short escape between two calm islands, see Fulidhoo versus Dhiffushi. Price your stay with the trip cost calculator.
Who each suits
Maafushi suits first-timers, groups and solo travellers. Dhiffushi suits couples, families with young children who should not sit on a long boat, and older travellers who want calm close to the airport.
