Maafushi versus Rasdhoo: which Maldives local island?

You want a local island with good snorkelling or diving and are weighing the easy, busy option against a smaller island on the edge of Rasdhoo Atoll.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Choose Maafushi for convenience, many excursions and the cheapest, most frequent boats. Choose Rasdhoo if diving or reef time is the main goal and you have 4 nights or more. It is a small island in Rasdhoo Atoll, near North Ari, with dive centres, a bikini beach and resorts nearby, about an hour from Male by fast boat at around USD 50 per person.

The short verdict

Maafushi is the easy all-rounder. It is close to the airport, with frequent boats and a long menu of snorkel trips, sandbanks and resort day passes.

Rasdhoo is the reef-focused choice. It is a small island with dive centres and nearby resorts, further out and with fewer boats, so it rewards a longer stay.

The dive-trip timing rule

Diving changes how you plan the last day. Divers Alert Network advises waiting before flying after diving, with longer gaps after several days of repeat dives.

A simple rule for a Malaysian dive trip:

  1. Day 1: Land on AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines and take the afternoon boat to Rasdhoo.
  2. Days 2 to 4: Dive or snorkel. Book two dives a day at most if you are new.
  3. Final full day: No diving. Snorkel, rest or visit a resort.
  4. Departure day: Morning boat to Male and fly home.

That is a 5-night trip for three dive days. On a 4-night trip, plan two dive days. Follow your dive centre's no-fly guidance, which may be longer than this outline.

The nearest hyperbaric chamber to both islands is at ADK Hospital in Male, open since January 2023. Carry dive insurance that covers evacuation and treatment.

Transfer cost for two, worked out

Return transfers for two adults:

  • Maafushi speedboat: USD 25 × 2 × 2 = USD 100, about RM409 at RM4.09.
  • Rasdhoo fast boat: USD 50 × 2 × 2 = USD 200, about RM818.

The public ferry to Rasdhoo is far cheaper but runs only three days a week and takes about three hours. Plan around it only if your dates are flexible. Model the full budget in the trip cost calculator.

What a stay feels like

Maafushi is busy and social, with cafes and boats everywhere. You can book a trip at short notice almost any day.

Rasdhoo is quieter, with a small bikini beach where travel guides report rays and sharks are sometimes seen in the shallows. The same guides warn that the reef near the beach is under pressure, so follow guides' instructions and never stand on coral.

Both are Muslim islands. Dress modestly away from the bikini beach, and expect quieter Friday middays.

Questions to ask a dive centre before you go

Dive prices on local islands are usually quoted per dive or as a package. Send the same questions to any centre on either island so you can compare fairly.

Is equipment rental included, and what does a full set cost per day? Are boat fees, Green Tax and service charge included in the dive price?

What certification and recent experience do you need for each site? How many divers are in a group, and is there a guide for every group?

What is your policy if weather cancels a dive? Ask too about refunds if you cannot dive because of ear problems or a cold.

Weather and sea conditions

The northeast monsoon from about December to April usually brings calmer seas and clearer water. The southwest monsoon from about May to November brings more wind and rain, and some sites may be unreachable on rough days.

Longer crossings to Rasdhoo feel the weather more than the short hop to Maafushi. Keep a spare day in a dive trip so a cancelled day does not cost you the main dives.

Combining Rasdhoo with nearby islands

Rasdhoo sits close to Ukulhas and Thoddoo, which makes a two-island trip easy. See moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas and moving between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo.

Maafushi pairs better with South Male resorts or with Fulidhoo, which is a different direction from Male.

Who each island suits

Maafushi suits first-timers, short trips, groups and anyone landing on the Batik Air evening flight. Rasdhoo suits divers, keen snorkellers and couples who want a small island with good reef access.

Questions travellers ask

Can beginners learn to dive on Rasdhoo?
Yes, travel guides list dive centres on Rasdhoo, including a PADI centre that offers courses. Ask each centre about course length, group size, equipment and whether the price includes Green Tax and boat fees. Allow at least three full days for an entry-level course and leave the last day dive-free.
Is there an ATM on Rasdhoo?
Wikivoyage lists a Bank of Maldives branch with a 24-hour ATM, with a withdrawal fee and limit. It also advises changing money in Male, since island rates can be poor. Check with your guesthouse that the ATM is working and whether dive centres accept cards.
Can I reach Rasdhoo by seaplane?
Travel guides note that seaplanes serve Rasdhoo as an access point for nearby islands. Seaplanes are expensive and mainly for resort guests, so ask your guesthouse whether a seat is possible and what it costs. The fast boat is the usual route for guesthouse visitors.
Is Rasdhoo good for snorkellers who do not dive?
Yes. Travel guides describe snorkelling at the bikini beach and around the reef, with chances of rays and reef sharks. Join a guided snorkel trip for the best sites, and check currents with your guesthouse. Maafushi offers more snorkel trips to choose from but busier sites.
