Quick answer

Dhiffushi is a small inhabited island in Kaafu (North Male) Atoll, about 40 to 50 minutes from Velana airport by shared speedboat, or 2 to 3 hours by the cheap public ferry. It has three designated tourist beaches, a house reef off the tourist beach and around 25 to 30 small guesthouses. It suits couples, families and older travellers who want quiet close to the airport, more than travellers who want a busy excursion hub.

Dhiffushi is the local island Malaysians pick when they want quiet beaches but do not want to spend half a day on a boat. It is small, calm and well under an hour from the airport by speedboat.

This page covers what the island is like and who it suits. For local islands in general, start with the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, or browse the island directory.

What kind of island is Dhiffushi?

Dhiffushi is an inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll, on the eastern edge of North Male Atoll. Hotelier Maldives describes it as the easternmost inhabited island in the country, which is why it is promoted for sunrise.

It is a small community of about 1,000 people (Hotelier Maldives, 2022), with a mosque, a school, a few supermarkets and a handful of cafes. The island is small enough to walk end to end.

Tourism is mid-sized. Guides count roughly 25 to 30 guesthouses, far fewer than Maafushi, and most have under ten rooms.

Island customs and the tourist beaches

Dhiffushi is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, shops and cafes, and keep swimwear for the designated tourist beaches.

The island has four beaches, three of them designated for tourists (Hotelier Maldives). aMaldives describes them as long and well kept, with sunbeds and shade, and says the house reef can be reached from the tourist beach.

The general rules are explained in what a bikini beach is. Alcohol is not sold on the island.

How a stay on Dhiffushi works

Most Malaysians land on a morning AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines flight and take an afternoon speedboat, reaching the island well before dinner. Reported departures from Male on most days include 11:30 and 16:30.

Days are slow: a morning snorkel off the tourist beach, a boat trip to a sandbank or turtle spot, then sunset. Dinner is usually at your guesthouse or one of a few cafes.

Getting there in brief

Shared speedboats take about 40 to 50 minutes and usually run two or three times a day. The public ferry costs MVR 22, takes 2 to 3 hours and does not run on Fridays.

Times and the choice between them are on how to get to Dhiffushi from Male airport.

Money, health and services

  • ATM: Bank of Maldives reported in May 2025 that every inhabited Kaafu island now has its ATM service. Still bring US dollars in small notes.
  • Shops: Hotelier Maldives counted four supermarkets plus smaller grocery shops.
  • Health: we could not confirm clinic details from an official source. Bring regular medicines from Malaysia and take insurance that covers evacuation to Male.
  • Taxes: small guesthouses charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, plus 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST on the room.

Our Dhiffushi cost breakdown shows how those add up for a 4-night stay.

Honeymooners, families and older travellers

Honeymooners who want privacy and calm like Dhiffushi, though there is no alcohol and no resort service. Many couples add one or two resort nights in North Male Atoll at the end.

Families gain most from the short transfer. Older travellers can avoid the slow public ferry by paying for the speedboat, and the island is flat and easy to walk.

When a different choice works better

Choose Maafushi if you want the cheapest shared speedboat and the widest choice of trips. Choose Thulusdhoo if surfing matters; see the Thulusdhoo island guide.

Choose Dhiffushi when you want long beaches, a quiet village and a transfer short enough for children and grandparents.

Questions travellers ask

Is Dhiffushi good for a first local island trip?
Yes, if you want calm more than choice. It is close to the airport, the tourist beaches are long and the house reef is near the shore. First-timers who want many cafes and a big menu of excursions usually prefer Maafushi, which is busier and has the cheapest shared speedboat.
Is food on Dhiffushi halal?
Dhiffushi is a Muslim community, so food in local cafes and guesthouses is halal by default and alcohol is not sold on the island. There is a mosque in the village. Muslim travellers usually find daily life easy, and Friday midday prayers shape opening hours.
Can I use a bank card on Dhiffushi?
Bank of Maldives reported in May 2025 that it offers ATM services on every inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll, which includes Dhiffushi. Card acceptance at small shops varies, so bring US dollars in small notes as well, and ask your guesthouse whether it charges a card fee.
Is Dhiffushi good for children?
It can be. The short transfer suits children who dislike long boat rides, and the island is small enough to walk. Swim on the tourist beaches, keep reef swims for calm days with an adult close by, and pick a guesthouse with a family room.
