Maafushi versus Ukulhas: which Maldives local island?

You like the idea of a local island but are unsure whether to pick the famous, busy one or a smaller island in North Ari with a quieter beach.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Choose Maafushi for a short, activity-filled trip close to the airport, at about USD 25 per person each way by speedboat. Choose Ukulhas for a smaller, quieter island with a lagoon beach in North Ari, at about USD 50 to 55 per person each way, and bring enough cash, because travel guides report no ATM or bank on the island.

The short verdict

Maafushi is busy, close and convenient. Ukulhas is small, calmer and further away, with a lagoon beach that is the main reason people choose it.

For 3 or 4 nights with lots of excursions, Maafushi is the practical pick. For 4 or 5 nights of beach time and quiet, Ukulhas is worth the longer boat ride.

The Ukulhas cash plan

Because travel guides report no ATM, bank or money changer on Ukulhas, plan your cash before you leave Male. Here is a worked example for two adults staying 4 nights.

  1. Return speedboat if paid locally: USD 55 × 2 × 2 = USD 220.
  2. Two excursions at an assumed USD 40 per person each: USD 160.
  3. Meals not covered by the guesthouse, at an assumed USD 30 per person per day: USD 240.
  4. Tips and small purchases: about USD 50.
  5. Cash buffer: about USD 670, or about RM2,740 at RM4.09.

The excursion and meal figures are planning assumptions, not quoted prices. Ask your guesthouse which items it can charge to a card, and reduce your cash buffer to match.

Bring clean, recent US dollar notes in small denominations. Rufiyaa is also accepted, and you can withdraw it at Velana airport before boarding.

What the beach and island feel like

Ukulhas is a small coral island, about 1,025 m long and 225 m wide, surrounded by a lagoon and reef. Travel guides describe a reef that is good for swimming and snorkelling, and a nearby uninhabited island used for picnics.

Bikini swimwear is allowed only on the main tourist beach, and the rule is enforced. Elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees.

Maafushi is busier, with many more guesthouses, cafes and boats. Its bikini beach is popular and lively rather than quiet.

Cost of reaching each island

Return transfers for two adults:

  • Maafushi: USD 25 × 2 × 2 = USD 100, about RM409.
  • Ukulhas: USD 50 to 55 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 220, about RM818 to RM900.

Rooms on both fall in the guesthouse band of about USD 60 to 180 per night before tax. Small guesthouses charge USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night. Build the whole trip in the trip cost calculator.

Arrival day planning

AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals usually connect to a same-day Ukulhas boat. The Batik Air arrival at about 21:55 does not, so plan a night in Hulhumale.

For Maafushi, late speedboats make even an evening arrival workable. That flexibility is a big reason Maafushi suits short trips.

Food, prayer times and daily rhythm

Both islands are Muslim communities, so food is halal by default and the call to prayer shapes the day. Many shops and services close around midday on Fridays for congregational prayers.

Maafushi has a wide choice of cafes and restaurants, from local short eats to grilled seafood. You can eat somewhere different every night.

Ukulhas has fewer places to eat, and travel guides list only a handful of cafes and small inns. Many visitors take half board at their guesthouse, which also makes the cash plan simpler.

Rough weather and the longer crossing

The longer boat ride to Ukulhas crosses open water between atolls. In the southwest monsoon, from about May to November, crossings can be bumpy and are occasionally delayed.

Keep at least one spare buffer between your boat back to Male and your flight home. Travellers prone to seasickness should take medication before boarding, sit near the back and keep their eyes on the horizon.

Who each island suits

Maafushi suits first-timers, friend groups and travellers who want variety every day. Ukulhas suits couples, families with older children and anyone who values a calm beach over choice.

Questions travellers ask

How long is the speedboat to Ukulhas?
Sources disagree. Wikivoyage gives about 50 minutes, while booking listings show about 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours, including stops at other islands. Plan on up to 2 hours and check the departure with your guesthouse. Booking listings name Atoll Transfer and Coral Speed as operators.
Can we pay by card on Ukulhas?
Some guesthouses accept cards, but travel guides report no bank, ATM or money changer on the island, and US dollars are widely accepted. Confirm with your guesthouse whether it takes cards for the room, meals and excursions, and bring cash for anything it does not cover.
Is there a resort near Ukulhas for a day pass?
Several resorts sit in North Ari Atoll, and guesthouses often arrange resort day trips. Availability and prices change, so ask your guesthouse which resorts it works with and what each pass includes. A split stay with a nearby resort is another option.
Is Ukulhas good for families?
It suits families who want a calm, compact island with a lagoon beach. Facilities are limited compared with Maafushi, so bring medicines and baby supplies. The longer boat ride can be tiring for small children, so pick a morning flight and avoid a same-day connection after a late arrival.
