The short verdict
Both islands are calmer than Maafushi, so you are choosing between two kinds of quiet. Dhigurah offers space: a long island with a long beach and a sandbank. Ukulhas offers compactness: a small island where the lagoon beach is a few minutes' walk from anywhere.
If whale sharks matter, choose Dhigurah. If you want everything close, choose Ukulhas.

What makes a local island beach feel quiet
Three things decide how quiet a beach feels on the day. Knowing them helps you judge any island, not just these two.
First, beach length. A long beach spreads people out, which is Dhigurah's main advantage.
Second, the number of guesthouse rooms on the island, which keeps changing as new places open. Third, excursion boats that bring day visitors to the beach or sandbank.
Ukulhas is small, so its beach is shorter, but travel guides describe it as hard to reach and lightly visited. Dhigurah sees whale shark boats in the area, but its beach has room to find your own spot.
The quiet-beach checklist for guesthouses
Send these questions to any guesthouse you are considering. Compare the answers side by side.
- How far is the bikini beach from the guesthouse, in minutes on foot?
- Does the beach have shade, sun loungers or toilets, and are they free?
- Do day-trip boats from other islands or resorts visit the beach?
- Is the beach or sandbank affected by the current season's winds?
- Is there a quiet area of the beach away from cafes and water sports?
Keep the replies with your booking. They also help if you want to change rooms later.
Transfer and cash, worked out for two
Return speedboats for two adults:
- Dhigurah: USD 50 to 65 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 260, about RM818 to RM1,063 at RM4.09.
- Ukulhas: USD 50 to 55 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 220, about RM818 to RM900.
The cost is similar, so the decision rests on beach style and wildlife. Small guesthouses on both islands charge USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night.
For Ukulhas, plan cash carefully, since travel guides report no ATM. Price the whole trip in the trip cost calculator.
Which season gives the calmest beach days
The drier northeast monsoon runs roughly December to April. Seas are usually calmer and skies clearer, which suits long beach days on either island.
The wetter southwest monsoon runs roughly May to November. Showers often pass quickly, but wind can make exposed beaches rougher, and boat crossings can be bumpy.
For Dhigurah, the wetter months still bring the best whale shark chances, with sightings peaking from August to November. Beach lovers who also want whale sharks often accept a few showers for that reason.
Matching your flight to the island
AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25 Maldives time. Both usually connect to a same-day boat to either island.
Batik Air lands about 21:55, too late for both. Book a night in Hulhumale and take a morning boat.
Return boats from Dhigurah leave early in the morning, according to booking listings. Check this before you choose a flight home.
Who each island suits
Dhigurah suits couples who like long beach walks, snorkellers and anyone hoping to see a whale shark. Ukulhas suits travellers who want a small, walkable island, including older travellers who prefer short distances on land.
