Maldives in December, weather and holiday trade-offs

December is the easiest month for Malaysian families to travel, and the dates you pick inside it matter more than the month itself.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

December usually marks the start of the drier northeast monsoon, though early December can still bring showers. The 2026 Malaysian year-end school holiday runs from 5 to 31 December for Group B states and 4 to 30 December for Group A, so family demand is high. Early December, up to about 20 to 23 December, is usually priced well below the Christmas and New Year festive period.

What is Maldives weather like in December?

December is usually the start of the northeast monsoon, the drier season that runs roughly from December to April. The Maldives Meteorological Service treats the month boundaries as approximate.

In practice, early December can still feel like the wet season, with showers and breezy days. Later in the month, settled sunny days tend to become more common, though no year is the same.

Hulhule, beside Male airport, recorded about 225 mm of rain in December 2022, close to the previous year (Maldives Meteorological Service). That is one observation, not an average. The best time to visit guide and the when to visit hub compare all twelve months.

Early December versus late December

The real decision is not whether to go in December, but which half. This table compares the two windows for the 2026 school holiday.

What December costs, with dates that matter

Published Malaysian packages show a price line around 20 to 23 December. Several stop their regular pricing there and exclude festive surcharges.

The HolidayGoGoGo 5D4N twin island package was RM5,499 per person twin share from 1 November to 20 December 2026, flights and festive surcharge excluded (checked 11 Oct 2026). The AF Travel Le Meridien Thilamaafushi 4D3N package was RM8,696 per adult twin share to 23 December 2026, with 24 December to 10 January not priced at all.

That gap usually means festive rates are quoted separately. Ask for the exact Christmas and New Year supplement before comparing. The trip cost guide helps you add it to the rest of the trip.

Worked example: a family of four in early December

Here is how a family might plan the first week of the 2026 break. It uses published packages as a guide only.

A family of two adults and two children aged 8 and 10 picks 6 to 10 December 2026, four nights. The break starts on Saturday 5 December for Group B states, so there is no school missed.

They choose a morning flight from KUL, landing in Male before noon, which leaves time for a seaplane or speedboat the same day. Children's rates, family rooms and extra-bed policies vary widely, so the family asks each resort for a quote that names the room type and every child's age.

Green Tax applies per guest per night, at USD 12 at resorts, with under-2s exempt. For four guests over four nights that is USD 192, or about RM785 at RM4.09 per USD.

Transfers and sea conditions

December weather is usually kinder to transfers than the wet months. Squalls still happen, especially early in the month, and a seaplane may wait for a band of rain to pass.

Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset, and Trans Maldivian advises landing by about 15:30 for a same-day transfer. On busy school holiday days, morning flights fill quickly, so book early.

Who December suits

December suits families who need school holiday dates and can book months ahead. It also suits travellers wanting drier odds who are happy to pay festive rates in late December.

Couples who want quiet and value may prefer November or January to March instead. The 2027 year-end break starts on 4 December 2027 for Group B states, so the same planning applies next year. For the month before, read Maldives in November.

December booking checklist

  • Confirm your state's school holiday dates (Group A or Group B).
  • Decide early or late December first, then compare packages.
  • Ask whether festive surcharges and gala dinners are compulsory.
  • Request family room or connecting room availability in writing.
  • Book a morning arrival flight for a seaplane resort.
  • Check children's passports have at least one month of validity after the trip.

Questions travellers ask

Is December dry in the Maldives?
It is the usual start of the northeast monsoon, the drier season, but it is not dry every day. Hulhule near Male recorded about 225 mm of rain in December 2022 in a Maldives Meteorological Service report. Expect improving odds through the month rather than guaranteed sunshine.
What is a festive surcharge?
Many resorts add a supplement for Christmas and New Year dates, and some require a compulsory gala dinner on 24 or 31 December. Malaysian package listings often state that the festive surcharge is excluded. Ask for the full festive cost, per person and per night, before comparing packages.
When should I book a December family trip?
As early as you can. Family rooms, connecting rooms and seaplane seats are limited, and Malaysian school holiday weeks coincide with peak demand from other markets. Booking several months ahead gives you more choice of rooms and flight times.
Is early December worth it to avoid peak prices?
For many families, yes. The first two weeks of the school break fall before the festive period, so packages priced to around 20 to 23 December often apply. You get school holiday dates without Christmas and New Year rates, with slightly higher odds of showers.
