Maldives ten-day island holiday itinerary

You have ten days and want to see more than one side of the Maldives without spending the holiday on boats.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Ten days (10D9N) works best in three stages: about four nights on a local island near Male, four nights at a resort, and one night near the airport if your flight home leaves early. That is four transfers in total, all routed through Velana airport. Green Tax for a couple over the nine nights comes to roughly USD 156 to 168 on this plan.

Key facts

  • Maafushi airport speedboat

    USD 25

Per person one way, book ahead

  • Public ferry Male to Maafushi

About 90 minutes to 2 hours

    No service on Fridays

  • Green Tax

USD 6 guesthouse, USD 12 resort

    Per guest per night

The three-stage plan in short

Ten days gives enough time for a local island, a resort and, if needed, a final night by the airport. Two island changes are comfortable at this length, while three start to feel like travel rather than holiday.

Every stage connects through Velana airport, because resorts run their own transfers from there. The itineraries and scheduling hub covers shorter versions, and the seven-night split stay is the two-stage cousin of this plan.

Stage map and transfer ledger

This ledger is for a couple, with fares and tax rates checked 11 October 2026. Resort transfer prices vary, so the resort line uses a mid-range figure.

The Hulhumale rate depends on the hotel's size: USD 6 applies to inhabited-island properties with 50 rooms or fewer. Shared speedboats to resorts near Male typically cost USD 100 to 370 per person return.

Day-by-day plan

Day 1: Land and speedboat to the local island

Morning arrivals from KUL (AirAsia around 09:50, Malaysia Airlines around 11:25) fit the shared speedboat schedule best. Book the Maafushi speedboat in advance; times are set by the operator.

With the Batik Air arrival around 21:55, sleep in Hulhumale and take the boat next morning.

Days 2 to 4: Local island life

Join one or two guesthouse excursions: snorkelling, a sandbank or a dolphin trip. Swim at the bikini beach and dress modestly in the village, covering shoulders and knees.

Plan the move on day 5 with your guesthouse. Ask for the speedboat time and a luggage hold if checkout is early. Our guide to moving from Maafushi to a resort covers this day in detail.

Day 5: Move to the resort

Take the speedboat to Velana and meet the resort host at arrivals. For a seaplane resort, you must be at the airport well before about 15:30.

Avoid Fridays for this move unless both boats are confirmed. Many services pause around midday on Fridays.

Days 6 to 8: Resort days

Use the resort for what a guesthouse lacks: a house reef, a water villa, a spa or an alcohol licence if that matters to you. Alcohol is sold only at resorts and licensed tourist facilities.

Day 9: Last resort day and optional move to Hulhumale

If your flight is early tomorrow, transfer to Hulhumale in the afternoon. Otherwise, stay and enjoy the last evening.

Day 10: Fly home

From Hulhumale the airport is close by road. From a speedboat resort, leave with time to reach Velana three hours before departure.

What to check before you lock the stages

  • Both properties confirm the moving-day boat times in writing.
  • The local island stage does not rely on a public ferry on a Friday.
  • Your resort accepts the arrival time your speedboat gives you.
  • You have a total figure for each stage, including the 28.7% service and GST uplift and Green Tax. The trip cost calculator helps.

Luggage between stages

Pack for the smallest boat on your route. Shared speedboats carry luggage in an open area, so use a dry bag for electronics and documents.

If your resort stage uses a seaplane, keep to 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage per person, or pay USD 5 per kg over that. Ask your Hulhumale hotel whether you can leave a bag there between stages, so you move lighter.

Who ten days suits

Ten days suits couples and friends who want to see local life and a resort, and travellers who prefer a mix of budget and comfort. It suits families with young children less, because each move with bags and children takes energy.

For a single resort and a slower pace, the eight-day first-timer plan is simpler. For two weeks, the fourteen-day slow travel itinerary spaces the moves further apart.

Questions travellers ask

Can I go straight from a local island to a resort without the airport?
Sometimes. Some resorts near Maafushi will send a private boat, at a price, and some refuse outside boats. Most travellers return to Velana and join the resort's normal transfer. Ask both properties before you book, and get the boat time in writing.
Which local island suits the first stage?
For a first trip, islands with a scheduled speedboat from the airport are the easiest. Maafushi is the best known and has the most guesthouses and excursions. Quieter options such as Fulidhoo, Thoddoo, Rasdhoo, Ukulhas or Dhigurah need more transfer planning, so read their island guides first.
Do I need the Hulhumale night at the end?
Only for early flights, or when your resort is seaplane-only and your flight leaves before mid-morning. With an evening flight, you can usually transfer from the resort on the day and wait at the airport.
Is ten days within the visa on arrival?
Yes for normal holiday lengths. Malaysians receive a free tourist visa on arrival when they meet the entry conditions, which is usually granted for up to 30 days. You need a return ticket, a paid booking and enough funds.
