Maldives fourteen-day slow travel itinerary

You have two weeks and would rather know a few islands well than tick off many.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Fourteen days (14D13N) is best spent on two or three bases, with each stay at least four nights and every move planned on a weekday. A guesthouse-led trip for a couple costs about USD 1,500, or RM6,100, for 13 nights of room, taxes and Green Tax on our worked example, before meals, excursions and island moves. Confirm each island-to-island route with your hosts before you book, since boat links change.

  • Guesthouse doubles

    About USD 60 to 180

Per room per night before taxes

How to structure two weeks

Two weeks rewards fewer moves, not more. Pick two or three bases, stay at least four nights in each, and plan each move on a weekday morning.

That gives about ten free days, which is more than enough to settle into island life. For shorter plans see the itineraries and scheduling hub, and for local island basics start with the local island travel hub.

Choosing your bases

Base pairs work best when the islands sit in the same atoll and a regular boat links them. We cover tested moves such as Maafushi and Fulidhoo, Rasdhoo and Ukulhas and Thoddoo and Rasdhoo.

Treat any other route as a question for your guesthouse, not a fact from a blog. Boat links depend on operators, weather and day of the week.

  • Two bases (7 and 6 nights): the calmest plan, good for families and older travellers.
  • Three bases (5, 4 and 4 nights): more variety, one extra moving day.
  • Two local islands plus a resort finish: a reward at the end, and an easier last transfer to the airport.

The weekly rhythm

A fourteen-day trip contains two Fridays. Many services close around midday for prayers, and some public ferries do not run, so keep Fridays as beach or rest days.

Day of weekGood useAvoid

From May to November the southwest monsoon brings wetter spells. Spread excursions across the trip rather than booking them all for the first week.

Fourteen days at a glance

Day 1: Fly in and reach base one

Morning arrivals (AirAsia around 09:50, Malaysia Airlines around 11:25) suit a same-day speedboat. With Batik Air around 21:55, rest in Hulhumale first.

Days 2 to 6: Base one

Settle in, learn the beaches and join two excursions at most. Ask your hosts about the next island and how they would get you there.

Day 7: Move to base two (avoid Friday)

Leave in the morning so a delay does not leave you arriving after dark. Keep cash for the boat and a snack.

Days 8 to 12: Base two

Repeat the rhythm: one or two trips, the rest slow. A three-base plan moves again on day 10 or 11.

Day 13: Last base and final checks

Confirm the boat to Velana for tomorrow, matched to your flight. If the flight is early, move to Hulhumale today.

Day 14: Fly home

Allow three hours at the airport. File nothing on departure: the departure declaration is no longer required.

Daily practicalities over two weeks

Two weeks means laundry, money and connectivity matter more than on a short trip. Ask each guesthouse about laundry service and Wi-Fi before you book.

Carry some US dollars in small notes for boats, tips and small cafes. Room bills are usually priced in US dollars, and many guesthouses accept cards.

Plan one admin hour per base: confirm the next boat, check the weather and settle any bill. It keeps the moving days calm.

Who slow travel suits

Two weeks suits retirees, couples on long leave, repeat visitors and anyone who enjoys village life, small cafes and reef days. Muslim travellers often find local islands comfortable, since local islands have mosques and halal food is the norm.

It suits travellers who want alcohol, nightlife or constant activity less well. A shorter plan such as the ten-day island holiday or the seven-night local island hopping itinerary packs more in.

Questions travellers ask

Can I use public ferries for the whole trip?
Partly. Government ferries are very cheap, around USD 2 to 3 per person, but slow and infrequent, and some do not run on Fridays. Timetables change, so ask your guesthouse for the current schedule. Many slow travellers mix ferries with shared speedboats on moving days.
Will two weeks on local islands feel restrictive?
Local islands follow local rules: no alcohol, modest dress in the village and swimwear on bikini beaches only. Most slow travellers enjoy the rhythm, but some add two or three resort nights in the middle or at the end as a change of pace.
How do I handle money over two weeks?
Guesthouses usually price in US dollars and many accept cards, but smaller cafes and boat operators may prefer cash. Carry some US dollars in small notes.
Is two weeks too long for children?
Not necessarily, but children tire of boat days. Choose two bases rather than three, pick islands with a calm swimming beach, and keep at least two rest days per base. A resort stage gives a kids' club and pool if energy flags.
