Maldives in August, weather and holiday trade-offs

August brings the Merdeka school break and the best wildlife odds of the year, in the middle of the wet season.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

August is in the southwest monsoon, with showers, windy spells and choppier seas on some days, and highs around 30 C. It is also the start of the peak whale shark season in South Ari and the heart of the manta season in Baa Atoll. In 2027 the school break runs 28 August to 5 September and Merdeka falls on Tuesday 31 August, so families can travel, but should pick a sheltered resort and allow for weather.

What is the weather like in the Maldives in August?

August is mid to late southwest monsoon. Expect a mix of sunshine and showers, some windy days and choppier seas, with highs around 30 C.

The difference from July is less about weather and more about wildlife and the Malaysian calendar. August is when two of the Maldives' big marine seasons overlap, and when Malaysian families get the Merdeka school break.

Wildlife or calm water: choose your atoll

August forces a choice. The best wildlife areas and the calmest family set-ups are not always the same place.

Visit Maldives says whale sharks can be seen year-round in South Ari, with the most sightings from August to November. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to them. Our whale shark timing guide covers how to plan around this.

Manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay peak from late June to October. The bay is snorkel only, with a licensed guide.

August 2027 calendar for Malaysians

Maulidur Rasul falls on Sunday 15 August 2027. The second-term school break runs 28 August to 5 September for Group B and 27 August to 4 September for Group A, per the KPM calendar.

National Day is Tuesday 31 August, inside the break. Many families will fly out on 28 August, which puts pressure on KUL to Male seats that weekend. Booking early, or flying out on a weekday, usually helps.

Planning for families in August

A school-break trip in August works best at a resort with a short speedboat transfer and a sheltered beach. Choppy days are easier to absorb when the boat ride is 30 minutes, not two hours.

Plan the open-water wildlife trip for early in the stay, so a weather cancellation can be rescheduled. Our page on calm-water family holiday dates explains how to read sea conditions.

Transfers and buffer days

Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset only, so aim to land in Male by about 15:30 for a same-day transfer. The morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines flights from KUL do this.

Rough weather can still delay transfers in August. For Baa or distant atolls, a night in Hulhumale before your flight home protects the connection.

What August costs

Some resorts lift rates in August because of European and Asian holidays, even though it is the wet season. HolidayGoGoGo's Adaaran Club Rannalhi family 4D3N package listed RM5,489 per adult twin share for August 2026, RM500 more than May to July (checked 11 Oct 2026, flights excluded).

Airfares on the Merdeka break also rise. Compare total trip costs in the trip cost calculator.

A sample week that balances both goals

A family of four on the Merdeka break could split the week between priorities. Spend the first nights on a calm-lagoon resort near Male, then move to South Ari for the second half if the forecast looks settled.

That plan has a cost: an extra transfer, usually by speedboat or domestic flight, and the risk that a rough day delays the move. Many families prefer one well-chosen resort instead.

The simpler alternative is a single South Ari resort with a sheltered beach. Book the whale shark excursion for the second or third day, leaving room to rebook it once if the sea is too rough.

Whichever plan you choose, keep expectations gentle with children. A missed whale shark is easier to accept when the lagoon, the pool and the reef fish already make the trip worthwhile.

Who August suits best

August suits wildlife-focused couples and divers, families on the school break with a well-chosen resort, and travellers happy to trade some sunshine for big marine encounters.

It suits less well anyone set on calm seas every day, nervous travellers on long boat rides, and budget travellers looking for the lowest prices. If the school break is not a constraint, compare September.

Questions travellers ask

Will we definitely see a whale shark in August?
No. Whale sharks live in the South Ari Marine Protected Area year-round, and Visit Maldives says sightings peak between August and November, but encounters depend on the day, the weather and the boat. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks there. Treat a sighting as a likely bonus on a multi-day stay, not a booked event.
Is August more expensive than July?
Sometimes. Some resorts and packages price August higher because of European summer holidays and Asian school breaks. One Malaysian package, HolidayGoGoGo's Adaaran Club Rannalhi family 4D3N, listed RM5,489 per adult for August 2026 against RM4,989 for July. Compare your resort's July and August rates directly.
Can children join a whale shark or manta snorkel?
Many operators accept children who swim confidently with a life jacket and snorkel, but rules and minimum ages vary, and open-water conditions in August can be choppy. Ask the resort or operator about age limits, life jackets and what happens if the sea is rough. Younger children may enjoy a dolphin cruise or a lagoon snorkel more.
