Maldives in September, weather and holiday trade-offs

September is one of the quieter months to visit, with the school break ending early and a Malaysia Day long weekend in the middle.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

September is in the southwest monsoon, with showers and some windy days, though many travellers find it a little more settled than June. It is usually a lower-priced month and whale shark sightings in South Ari remain in their peak season. In 2027 the school break ends on 5 September and Malaysia Day falls on Thursday 16 September, so a four-day weekend with one day of leave is the obvious Malaysian window.

What is Maldives weather like in September?

September sits in the southwest monsoon, the wet season that Visit Maldives places between May and November. Expect showers and some windy, choppy days, with highs around 30 C.

Many September days still have long sunny spells. Secondary summaries of the Maldives Meteorological Service baseline put September's rain days below the May and June levels, but the range between years is wide.

Malaysia Day weekend: a three-night plan

The clearest Malaysian window in September 2027 is Malaysia Day, which falls on Thursday 16 September. Take Friday 17 September as leave and you have four days.

DayPlanNotes
Thursday 16 SepMorning KUL departure, land Male around 09:50 to 11:25AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines timings, check schedules
Thursday afternoonSpeedboat to the resort or islandShort transfer keeps the day usable
Friday and SaturdayTwo full days on the islandPut the boat excursion on Friday, in case Saturday is rough
Sunday 19 SepTransfer to Velana, fly homeLeave transfer margin for weather

Arrival times come from sample KUL to Male schedules and change seasonally. The evening Batik Air arrival would cost you the first night, so a morning flight matters on a short trip.

The rest of September

After 5 September 2027, when the second-term school break ends, Malaysian demand drops. The weeks either side of Malaysia Day are among the quietest of the year for Malaysian travellers.

That suits couples and adult groups who can take a full week of leave. A seven-night stay in September often costs less than four nights in February, though the exact gap depends on the resort.

Whale sharks and diving

September is inside the peak whale shark season in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, which Visit Maldives gives as August to November. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks there.

Diving continues all year. Ask your dive centre how they adjust sites to the monsoon currents. For manta timing in Baa, read when to visit Hanifaru Bay.

What September costs

September is usually in a lower rate band. HolidayGoGoGo's Adaaran Club Rannalhi water bungalow family 4D3N package listed RM4,989 per adult twin share for May to July and September 2026, against RM5,489 for August and October (checked 11 Oct 2026, flights excluded).

That is RM500 per adult, or RM1,000 for a couple, less than August for the same package. Compare with your own dates using the trip cost calculator and our guide to when the Maldives is cheapest.

Before you book a September trip

  • Ask whether any restaurant, pool or spa will close for low-season maintenance.
  • Choose a resort or island with a short transfer if you have four days or fewer.
  • Plan the open-water excursion early in the stay.
  • Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so land in Male by about 15:30 for a same-day seaplane transfer.
  • Pack a light rain layer and a dry bag for boat days.

A full week in September

A seven-night stay suits September best. It gives room for the odd grey day and makes the most of low-season rates.

Two shapes work well. One resort for all seven nights is the simplest and avoids an extra transfer. Splitting four nights on a local island and three at a resort lowers the total cost, though each move adds a weather-dependent boat ride.

For a split stay, put the local island first and the resort last. Your final transfer to Velana is then from the resort, which usually has its own boat and staff to rearrange timings if the sea is rough.

Who September suits best

September suits couples looking for quiet resorts, travellers on a budget, divers and whale shark fans, and Malaysians using the Malaysia Day long weekend for a short trip.

It suits less well families who need the school break (it ends on 5 September 2027) and anyone who wants dry-season reliability for a once-in-a-lifetime photo. For those, compare August or the January to April window.

Questions travellers ask

Is September a rainy month in the Maldives?
It is part of the wet southwest monsoon, so showers are normal. Secondary summaries of the Maldives Meteorological Service baseline place September's rain days lower than May or June, but individual years vary a lot. Expect some grey or wet spells and plan a trip that still works if one or two days are cloudy.
Is a four-day Malaysia Day trip worth it?
It can be, if the transfer is short. With a morning flight from KUL on Thursday 16 September and an afternoon flight home on Sunday, you get three nights. A speedboat resort near Male or a local island like Maafushi keeps transfer time low. A seaplane resort on a four-day trip spends a larger share of your time travelling.
Are resorts quiet in September?
Often, yes, compared with peak months. European summer holidays are ending and Malaysian schools are back after 5 September 2027. Quieter resorts can mean easier restaurant bookings and calmer pools, though some resorts schedule maintenance or refurbishment in the low season. Ask whether any facilities will be closed during your dates.
