Maldives in January, weather and holiday trade-offs

January has some of the best Maldives weather, but it also has peak prices and the start of the Malaysian school year.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

January is one of the driest, calmest months in the Maldives, with daytime highs around 30 C and usually flat seas. The catch is price, since it is peak season for resorts, and the 2027 Malaysian school year starts on 4 January. It suits couples, honeymooners and adults without school-age children best, especially from the second week onwards.

Key facts

  • Rain days

    Roughly 6 to 8

    Secondary source, MMS baseline

  • School reopens

    4 January 2027

    Both groups, KPM calendar

  • Daytime highs

    About 30 C

Is January a good time to visit the Maldives?

Yes, for weather. January sits in the drier northeast monsoon, and a secondary summary of the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) baseline gives it roughly 6 to 8 rain days, among the lowest of the year.

Daytime highs stay around 30 C. Seas are usually calm, which helps seaplanes keep to schedule and makes snorkelling easier for beginners.

The trade-off is cost and timing. January is high season at resorts, and Malaysian school starts early in the month. See the full year in our Maldives weather by month guide or the When to Visit hub.

January date windows compared

January is really three different months for a Malaysian traveller. This table shows how they differ.

WindowWeather oddsPrice pressureWho it suits
1 to 3 JanuaryGoodHighest: festive rates, minimum staysFamilies using the end of the year-end school holiday
4 to 15 JanuaryGoodHigh, but festive surcharges usually endCouples, honeymooners, retirees
16 to 31 JanuaryGoodHigh, steadyAnyone using annual leave, ahead of the CNY rush

The middle of the month is often the best balance. You keep the dry-season odds without paying New Year premiums. Confirm each resort's festive period, since the cut-off date differs.

What January costs compared with later in the year

January sits in the most expensive pricing band for many resorts. One published example: AF Travel's 4D3N Le Meridien Thilamaafushi package lists RM8,956 per adult twin share for 11 January to 14 April 2027 (checked 11 Oct 2026, flights excluded).

The same package is RM7,936 from 15 April to 30 September 2027. For a couple, January costs RM2,040 more for the same room and plan (RM1,020 x 2).

Use the trip cost calculator to add flights, taxes and transfers. Our guide to what a Maldives trip costs from Malaysia explains each line.

January and the Malaysian calendar

The 2027 school year begins on 4 January for both Group A and Group B states, according to the KPM calendar summarised by ecentral.my. That makes January hard for families with school-age children.

There is no major federal holiday in January 2027 to stretch leave. Chinese New Year falls on 6 and 7 February 2027, so late January works well for anyone wanting to travel before the festive rush.

Flights and transfers in January

Calm weather makes January a reliable month for seaplane resorts. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so land in Male by about 15:30 for a same-day transfer, per Trans Maldivian Airways.

From KUL, the morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals connect comfortably. If you take the evening Batik Air flight, plan a night in Hulhumale first. Read more on direct versus connecting flights to Male.

Who January suits, and who should pick another month

January suits honeymooners, couples marking an anniversary, older travellers who prefer calm boat rides and parents of toddlers. It also suits divers who prefer flat surface conditions.

It suits families with school-age children less, unless they travel in the first days around New Year. Budget travellers may get more from late April, or from a local island where January prices rise less sharply. Compare with February if Chinese New Year leave works better for you.

January planning checklist

  • Ask each resort for its festive period dates and any compulsory New Year dinner.
  • Book flights early if your dates touch the first week of January.
  • Choose a morning KUL departure if you want a seaplane transfer on arrival day.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard, since the sun is strong in the dry season.
  • Book a resort with shade and a pool for midday, when the January sun is fierce.

What can still go wrong in January?

A dry month is not a rain-free month. A passing front can bring a cloudy day or a short squall, and wind can pick up briefly even in the northeast monsoon.

The bigger January risk is crowding, not weather. Popular resorts can sell out of a specific villa type, and transfer slots at busy seaplane terminals can mean a wait at Velana before departure.

Plan for both. Book the villa category you actually want early, and keep the first afternoon light in case your transfer leaves later than planned. If you only have four nights, a speedboat resort near Male saves time that a seaplane queue can eat.

Travel insurance is still worth having in the dry season. Flight disruption in Kuala Lumpur, illness or a family emergency matter more than the weather in most January trips.

Questions travellers ask

Is New Year's week in the Maldives more expensive than the rest of January?
Usually, yes. Many resorts set a festive period across late December and early January with higher rates, minimum stays and sometimes a compulsory gala dinner on 31 December. Rates often ease after the first week of January, though they stay in the high-season band. Ask for the exact festive period dates when you compare resorts.
Can families with school children go in January?
Only in the first days of the month, before school reopens on 4 January 2027. That overlaps the expensive New Year period. Most Malaysian families find the March first-term break or the December holiday easier. If your children are below school age, January is a strong choice because of the calm sea.
Is January good for snorkelling?
Calm surface conditions in January usually make house-reef snorkelling easier, particularly for beginners and nervous swimmers. Visibility depends on the reef, the tide and the day, so no month guarantees clear water. Choose a resort with an accessible house reef if snorkelling is a priority.
