Maldives in February, weather and holiday trade-offs

February brings some of the calmest Maldives weather of the year, and in 2027 it also brings Chinese New Year and the start of Ramadan.

Quick answer

February is usually one of the driest and sunniest months in the Maldives, with calm seas and highs around 30 C. In 2027, Chinese New Year falls on 6 and 7 February and Ramadan is expected to begin a few days later, so flights from KUL around CNY fill early and local islands run on a fasting-month rhythm. Resort stays are least affected; local-island stays need more planning.

Is February a good month for the Maldives?

February is one of the best weather months of the year. It sits in the heart of the northeast monsoon, the season Visit Maldives describes as dry, and a secondary summary of the MMS baseline gives it about 5 rain days.

Seas are usually at their calmest and sunshine is long. The trade-offs in 2027 are holiday demand around Chinese New Year and the start of Ramadan, which matters if you stay on a local island.

February 2027 week by week

The weather is similar all month. The calendar is what changes, so plan by week.

Ramadan dates follow the moon. Working back from Hari Raya Aidilfitri, expected on 10 and 11 March 2027, the fasting month should start around 9 or 10 February. Confirm closer to the time.

Chinese New Year in the Maldives

CNY is a popular moment for Malaysian families because of the long weekend. In 2027 the two federal holidays fall on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February, so many families add annual leave on either side.

That creates a short, intense demand peak on the three nonstop KUL to Male flights. Book flights first, then the resort, and avoid putting your outbound flight on the day before the holiday. Our Chinese New Year Maldives holidays page covers family planning in depth.

Ramadan on local islands and at resorts

The Maldives is a Muslim country, so Ramadan shapes daily life on inhabited islands. Expect cafes to open later, slower daytime service and livelier evenings after iftar.

Resorts are separate islands run for international guests and usually operate as normal. For Muslim travellers this can be a meaningful time to visit; ask the resort about suhoor and iftar times before booking. Read how Ramadan changes local islands for detail.

Transfers and flights in February

Calm seas make February reliable for seaplanes, which fly only in daylight. To reach a seaplane resort on arrival day, Trans Maldivian advises landing in Male by about 15:30.

The morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals from KUL make that connection. The evening Batik Air flight does not, so add a Hulhumale night. During CNY week, check that your chosen flight still has seats before you pay a resort deposit.

What February costs

February is high season, priced like January at most resorts. One published package, AF Travel's 4D3N Le Meridien Thilamaafushi, lists a single rate band from 11 January to 14 April 2027, so February costs the same as January there.

The bigger swing comes from airfares around CNY. Compare a CNY-week departure with one ten days later using the trip cost calculator.

Who February suits best

February suits couples who want the strongest weather odds, CNY families who book early and beginner snorkellers. It also suits Muslim travellers who want a resort stay during the early part of Ramadan with flexible meal times.

It suits less well anyone needing a cheap last-minute trip around CNY, or a backpacker hoping for busy daytime cafes on a local island. For lower prices with similar weather, compare March outside the school break, or late April.

Local islands or resort in February?

If you are choosing between a guesthouse and a resort, February 2027 tilts the balance. Before Ramadan, local islands such as Maafushi run at full pace, with cafes, excursions and busy evenings.

After the fasting month begins, daytime life on local islands slows, while resorts continue as usual. A traveller who wants lively daytime dining may prefer a resort, or the first week of February on a local island.

February checklist

  • Book CNY-week flights before you choose the resort.
  • If staying on a local island, ask the guesthouse about meal times during Ramadan.
  • Ask resorts whether they offer suhoor and iftar arrangements.
  • Leave a buffer night if your return flight is the last day of the CNY long weekend.

Questions travellers ask

Do resorts change anything during Ramadan?
Resorts serve international guests and usually keep restaurants, bars and activities running as normal. Some offer iftar and suhoor arrangements for Muslim guests on request. Ask the resort directly how it handles meal times and prayer space during Ramadan, since arrangements vary and are rarely printed on booking sites.
Is February too busy because of Chinese New Year?
The CNY week is busy on KUL to Male flights and at resorts popular with Asian families. Outside that week, February is busy mainly with long-haul visitors escaping winter. If you can travel in the second half of February, you usually keep the same weather with less Malaysian holiday pressure on airfares.
Is February good for a first Maldives trip?
Very good. Calm seas make seaplane and speedboat transfers more predictable, and snorkelling from the beach is easier for beginners. The main cost is peak pricing. A first-timer on a tighter budget could look at a local island guesthouse, keeping in mind the Ramadan rhythm from around 9 or 10 February in 2027.
