Maldives in June, weather and holiday trade-offs

June is firmly in the wet season, yet it is also the end of the Malaysian mid-year school holiday and the start of the manta season.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

June is in the southwest monsoon, so expect more cloud, regular showers and some windy, choppy days, with temperatures still around 30 C. Resort rates are usually lower than in the dry season. In 2027 the Malaysian mid-year school holiday runs to 6 June, and the Awal Muharram and Agong's birthday holidays create a long weekend on 5 to 7 June. Families should choose a sheltered resort close to Male; manta fans can look at Baa Atoll.

What is the weather like in the Maldives in June?

June sits in the southwest monsoon, the season Visit Maldives describes as wet, running May to November. Expect more cloud, frequent showers and windy spells that make the sea choppier.

It still feels tropical. Daytime highs stay around 30 C, and many days have long sunny breaks between showers.

For the whole year, read the Maldives weather by month guide. For all season pages, use the When to Visit hub.

June 2027 calendar for Malaysians

June starts busy and then goes quiet. The KPM calendar (via ecentral.my) runs the Group B mid-year holiday to 6 June 2027, and Group A to 5 June.

The federal list then adds Awal Muharram on Sunday 6 June and the Agong's official birthday on Monday 7 June. That makes 5 to 7 June a long weekend, at the tail end of the school holiday.

After 7 June there is no Malaysian holiday for the rest of the month. That is when flight demand and resort occupancy from Malaysia drop.

June resort-fit checklist for families

In the wet season, the resort matters more than the month. Use this checklist before you pay a deposit.

  • Transfer under about an hour by speedboat. Short crossings are easier in choppy seas and less exposed to delays.
  • Sheltered lagoon or shallow beach. Some sides of an island face the swell; ask which beach is calmer in the southwest monsoon.
  • Kids' club or indoor play space. It keeps a wet afternoon fun.
  • Covered dining and a pool. Pools stay usable in light rain and calm wind.
  • Flexible excursion policy. Ask whether cancelled boat trips are refunded or rebooked.
  • Medical access. Ask about the resort doctor or nurse and the evacuation plan.

A resort that ticks most of these can make June feel easy even with showers. Our page on rainy-day alternatives for young children has more ideas.

Mantas and marine life in June

June is when the plankton season starts to bring manta rays to Baa Atoll. Gatherings at Hanifaru Bay usually build from late June and run to about November, peaking later, according to PADI and Zublu.

Hanifaru is snorkel only, and every group must go with a licensed Hanifaru guide, usually arranged by the resort. Touching marine life and flash photography are not allowed. See when to visit Hanifaru Bay before choosing a Baa resort for June.

Transfers in June

Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset, and a storm can hold them for an hour or more. Trans Maldivian advises landing in Male by about 15:30 for a same-day seaplane.

In June, a midday KUL arrival leaves less slack than in the dry season. If your resort is a long seaplane flight away, consider a Hulhumale night on arrival or before departure.

What June costs

June usually falls in the low-season band at resorts. One Malaysian example: HolidayGoGoGo's Adaaran Club Rannalhi 4D3N water bungalow family package lists RM4,989 per adult twin share for May to July and September 2026, against RM5,489 for August and October (checked 11 Oct 2026, flights excluded).

The 2027 rates may differ, but the pattern of a lower June band is common. Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

Who June suits best

June suits families using the end of the school holiday with a well-chosen resort, couples who value lower prices, and snorkellers keen on the early manta season. It suits travellers staying five nights or more best.

It suits less well a short trip with a long seaplane leg, or anyone who gets seasick easily on choppy crossings. Compare July if you have no school constraint.

Questions travellers ask

Are manta rays guaranteed at Hanifaru Bay in June?
No. Manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay usually build from around late June and peak later in the season, depending on plankton, tides and currents. Some days have many mantas, others none. Hanifaru is snorkel only, and every group needs a licensed guide, usually arranged by your resort. Treat a sighting as a bonus rather than the reason the trip succeeds.
Is June too rough for young children?
Not if you choose well. Resorts with a sheltered lagoon, a shallow beach and a short speedboat transfer are much easier with toddlers in June than an exposed island far from Male. Keep beach time flexible around showers, and pick a resort with a kids' club or indoor play space for wet afternoons.
Do flights from Kuala Lumpur cost more in June?
The first week of June 2027 overlaps the end of the mid-year school holiday and a long weekend, so fares can be higher on those dates. After 7 June, Malaysian demand usually falls away. Compare return dates on either side of the long weekend before you book.
