Maldives in May, weather and holiday trade-offs

May is the turning point of the Maldives year, and several Malaysian holidays fall in it too.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

May is the month the wetter southwest monsoon usually arrives in the Maldives, spreading from the southern atolls in early May to the whole country by month-end. Expect more showers, windier days and lower resort rates than in April. In 2027, Labour Day, Hari Raya Haji, Wesak and the start of the mid-year school holiday on 22 May all fall in May, so plan flights early and allow weather margin on transfer days.

What is Maldives weather like in May?

May is the start of the wetter southwest monsoon (Hulhangu). Showers become more frequent, wind swings to the west and seas get choppier on some days.

It does not arrive everywhere at once. MET explains that the monsoon reaches the southern atolls first, in the first or second week of May, then spreads north. In 2026 it was declared for the south on about 8 May (Atoll Times, 10 May 2026).

Temperatures barely change. What you trade is some sunshine for lower prices. For the year view, see our weather by month guide and the When to Visit hub.

May 2027 holiday calendar for Malaysians

May 2027 is packed with Malaysian holidays. This is where most of the planning effort goes.

Date (2027)HolidayPlanning note
Saturday 1 MayLabour DayWeekend, limited leave value
Monday 17 MayHari Raya Haji (expected)Long weekend; 18 May also a holiday in Kelantan and Terengganu
Thursday 20 MayWesak DayBridge to the weekend with one day of leave
22 May to 6 JuneMid-year school holiday (Group B)Group A from 21 May to 5 June

Dates come from the Human Resources Online federal list and the KPM calendar via ecentral.my. Hari Raya Haji depends on moon sighting.

A smart combination is 15 to 23 May: the Haji long weekend plus Wesak, using about three days of leave. It sits before the school rush on flights.

How the monsoon onset affects a May trip

Most May days are not washouts. A typical pattern is a bright morning, building cloud and a heavy shower, then clearing.

The days to watch are the ones with strong westerly wind. They make the sea choppy, can cancel snorkel excursions and may delay seaplanes. MET often issues rough-weather advisories in the first days after onset.

Build a little slack. Avoid putting your only snorkel trip on the last day, and keep one flexible afternoon.

Transfers and buffer nights

Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and Trans Maldivian advises landing in Male by about 15:30 to transfer the same day. In May, a midday storm can push a late-afternoon flight to the next morning.

For a short stay, a speedboat resort in North or South Male Atoll reduces the risk. For a seaplane resort, consider a buffer night in Hulhumale before your flight home. Our page on arrival-day transfer delay planning covers the options.

Does May cost less?

Often, yes. Many resorts and Malaysian agency packages price May in a lower band than January to mid-April. Airfares can still rise around the Haji weekend and the school holiday.

Compare one resort across April and May before deciding, and use the trip cost calculator to include flights and taxes.

Who May suits best

May suits flexible couples, adult groups chasing value, travellers using the Haji and Wesak bridge, and families who choose a calm lagoon resort for the school holiday.

It suits less well a four-night trip with a long seaplane transfer, or anyone who needs guaranteed sunshine for a photo shoot. If that is you, look at April, and read whether the rainy season is a good time.

How to read a May forecast

Forecasts a week ahead in the monsoon are useful for wind, less so for exact rain. A day shown with a rain icon may still have hours of sunshine.

Watch the wind speed and direction more than the rain symbol. Strong westerlies matter for boat trips and seaplanes, while a few showers rarely do.

MET issues weather advisories when strong wind or rough seas are expected. Ask your resort to tell you if one affects your transfer day, and keep their contact number handy.

Look again 48 hours before each boat day. If the outlook is poor, move the excursion rather than cancelling it, and keep the calm-lagoon snorkel as your backup plan.

May checklist

  • Book flights first if you are using the Haji or Wesak long weekend.
  • Choose a resort with a sheltered lagoon for young children.
  • Keep one flexible afternoon for rescheduled excursions.
  • Pack a light rain jacket and a dry bag for boat trips.
  • Ask the resort what indoor activities run on wet afternoons.

Questions travellers ask

Is early May safer than late May for weather?
Slightly, on average. The monsoon usually reaches the southern atolls first, in the first or second week of May, and the north by the end of the month. Early May in the central and northern atolls can still feel like late April. Year-to-year variation is large, though, so no part of May is reliably dry.
Should a family use the mid-year school holiday for the Maldives?
It can work well if you choose a resort with a sheltered lagoon, a kids' club or indoor space and a short speedboat transfer. The holiday starts on 22 May 2027 for Group B, after the monsoon has usually set in. Prices are often lower than in March, but airfares rise with Malaysian demand.
Does rain in May ruin a honeymoon?
Not usually. Many May days mix sunshine with one or two heavy showers that pass in under an hour, though some days are cloudy throughout. A stay of five nights or more gives you room for a grey day. If clear-sky photos are essential, schedule the shoot with flexibility or choose April.
