The short answer
Upgrade when the upgrade price is close to what you would spend anyway, and when you will use most of the meals and drinks it buys. Skip it when you can eat elsewhere cheaply, or when you will be away from the resort for many meals.
This page is for the moment an agency or resort offers you an upgrade. The plan-by-plan comparisons sit on separate pages, linked below, and the wider budget is on our Budget and Real Cost hub.
The six-point upgrade scorecard
Give your trip one point for each statement that is true. Four or more points usually means the upgrade is worth taking.
| Question | Point if... |
|---|---|
| Are you staying on a resort island? | Yes, no other places to eat |
| Are you staying three nights or more? | Yes, the convenience adds up |
| Will you eat at the resort on most days? | Fewer than two full-day trips planned |
| Will you use the drinks the upgrade adds? | Yes, if it is an all-inclusive upgrade |
| Do children in your group pay adult rates? | No, or they are big eaters |
| Is the upgrade quoted per person per day, taxed? | Yes, so you can compare clearly |
The last point matters because it tests the quote, not your appetite. An upgrade quoted vaguely ("upgrade available at extra cost") is hard to judge and often costs more than expected.
How to convert an upgrade quote into ringgit
Resorts usually quote upgrades in US dollars "++", meaning service charge and GST are added. Multiply by 1.287 for the taxed figure, then by the exchange rate.
At RM4.09 per USD (Business Today, 7 October 2026), each "++" dollar costs about RM5.26. So a USD 65++ upgrade is about RM342 per person per day, and a USD 50++ upgrade is about RM263.
Then multiply by people and nights. A couple upgrading from half board to full board for three nights at USD 65++ pays 65 x 2 x 3 = USD 390++, which is about USD 502 or RM2,053.
Worked example: a family offered full board
A family of two adults and children aged 4 and 8 has a half board package at a resort and is offered full board for four nights. Using the Hard Rock example of USD 65++ per adult per day, with the 4-year-old eating free and the 8-year-old at 50%:
| Who | Daily upgrade (USD++) | Four nights |
|---|---|---|
| Two adults | 65 x 2 = 130 | 520 |
| Child aged 8 at 50% | 32.50 | 130 |
| Child aged 4 | 0 | 0 |
| Total | 162.50 | 650 |
Taxed, USD 650++ becomes about USD 837, or roughly RM3,422. If the family has a full-day excursion on two of the four days, they are paying for eight adult-equivalent lunches they will not eat at the resort.
That pushes the scorecard down. In this case a la carte lunch on the two resort days is likely cheaper, and the family keeps the flexibility.
When to decide, and what to watch
Decide before you fly where you can. Many resorts require the same plan for the whole stay and for every room in the booking, which Hard Rock states in its published terms.
Check what your package already includes. HolidayGoGoGo's 5D4N twin-island honeymoon, checked on 11 October 2026, combined half board on Maafushi with premium all-inclusive at Centara Ras Fushi. An upgrade on that trip would only make sense for the Maafushi nights, where cafes nearby already give cheap options.
Finally, check whether the upgrade adds anything beyond food and drink. Some plans include snorkel gear, non-motorised water sports or a spa credit, which may change the answer if you would have paid for them anyway.
What the upgrade ladder costs at one resort
The gaps between plans at Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, checked on 12 October 2026, show how quickly upgrades grow. Each step below is per person per day, taxed at 1.287 and converted at RM4.09.
Half board to full board is USD 65++, about RM342. Full board to all-inclusive is USD 50++, about RM263. Half board straight to all-inclusive is USD 115++, about RM605.
Full board to premium all-inclusive is USD 139++, about RM731. That top step buys premium drinks and discounts on in-villa dining and the spa, so it suits only guests who will use them heavily.
When the upgrade is not worth it
Skip the upgrade on local islands, for very light eaters, and on trips built around diving or day excursions. It is also poor value for non-drinkers offered all-inclusive, where a full board or soft-drinks plan usually costs less.
For the exact gaps, read half board versus full board costs and the all-inclusive versus full board break-even. To see the effect on your total trip, add the upgrade in the trip cost calculator.
