Half board versus full board in the Maldives, a ringgit comparison

You are deciding whether to pay for lunch in advance or keep it flexible, and want the difference in ringgit.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Full board adds lunch to half board's breakfast and dinner. At Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, checked on 12 October 2026, the gap is USD 65++ per person per day, about USD 84 or RM342 once service charge and GST are added. Full board pays off if each of you would otherwise spend more than about USD 65++ on lunch and lunchtime extras at the resort.

What is the difference between half board and full board?

Half board gives you breakfast and dinner. Full board adds lunch. That single meal is the whole difference in most resorts, though some plans also differ on drinks.

The decision is really about lunch: whether you will eat it at the resort every day, and what it would cost you to buy it as you go. This page puts that in ringgit. For other meal plan questions, start from our Budget and Real Cost hub.

The price gap, worked out in ringgit

We use Hard Rock Hotel Maldives as a worked example because its official page lists both plans with prices on the same basis. Both figures are per person per day and "++", checked on 12 October 2026.

StepHalf boardFull board
Published supplementUSD 95++USD 160++

In ringgit at RM4.09about RM500about RM842
Gap per person per dayabout RM342

The arithmetic for the gap is 65 x 1.287 = USD 83.66, then 83.66 x 4.09 = RM342.17. Other resorts will have different figures, but the method is the same.

Couple and family totals

The gap multiplies across people and nights, which is where the decision becomes real. This table uses the Hard Rock example for a four-night stay.

PartyWho pays the gapCalculation (USD++)Taxed USDAbout RM
Couple2 adults65 x 2 x 4 = 5206692,737
Family, children aged 4 and 82 adults + 1 child at 50%(65 x 2 + 32.50) x 4 = 6508373,422
Family, teens aged 13 and 154 at adult rate65 x 4 x 4 = 1,0401,3385,474

Hard Rock's published terms say children under 6 eat free from the kids' menu, children aged 6 to 11 eat free from the kids' menu or pay 50% of the adult plan, and those 12 and over pay as adults. We assumed the 8-year-old pays 50% to show the full cost.

The lunch break-even rule

Compare the pre-tax gap with what you would spend on lunch at menu prices. Both carry the same service charge and GST, so you can compare the "++" figures directly.

At Hard Rock, full board makes sense if each person would spend more than USD 65++ a day on lunch, including any snacks at lunchtime. If your typical lunch is lighter, half board plus a la carte lunch wins.

Then adjust for days you will not eat lunch at the resort. A full-day excursion, a sandbank picnic or a late brunch all count. Three lunch-free days out of four make full board hard to justify for most couples.

A quick way to test your own trip

Count the days on which you will realistically eat lunch at the resort. Multiply that number by what you think each person would spend at lunch, in "++" dollars.

Now compare that total with the full board gap for your whole stay. For a couple on four nights at Hard Rock, the gap is USD 520++. If your lunch estimate for the stay is below that figure, half board is the cheaper choice.

Arrival and departure days need care too. If you land at 09:50 on AirAsia, you may arrive in time for lunch on day one, while a late check-out lunch on the last day is common. Ask the resort how it counts meals on those days.

Which plan suits which traveller

Half board usually suits couples who sleep in and take a late breakfast, travellers with several full-day trips booked, and light eaters. It also suits anyone staying on a local island, where cafes make lunch cheap and easy.

Full board usually suits families with teenagers who pay adult rates and eat a lot, travellers who prefer one fixed cost, and those staying four nights or more on a remote resort. Older travellers who dislike checking prices often find full board more relaxing.

Look at all-inclusive instead if you drink with meals. The all-inclusive versus full board comparison shows when drinks tip the balance.

Checks before you choose

Confirm whether everyone must be on the same plan, as Hard Rock requires. Ask where lunch is served, because a buffet at the main restaurant is a different experience from a set menu at a beach club.

Check the child age bands, since they often swing a family's decision more than the adult price. And if you are comparing two resorts, line up each one's half board and full board on the same "per person per day, taxed" basis first.

Questions travellers ask

Can I buy lunch a la carte on half board?
Yes, on almost every resort you can sign lunch to your villa at menu prices plus service charge and GST. That gives you the most flexibility, but you pay the "++" uplift on every item. If you expect to skip lunch on several days, this is usually cheaper than full board.
Can one of us take half board and the other full board?
Usually not. Many resorts require everyone in the booking to be on the same plan, and Hard Rock Hotel Maldives states this in its published terms, together with no change of plan during the stay. Ask before you book if your group has very different appetites.
Is half board enough on a local island?
Often it is. On local islands such as Maafushi there are cafes within walking distance, and lunch out is usually cheaper than at a resort. Half board or even breakfast only can work well. On a resort island, every meal comes from the resort, so the lunch question carries more weight.
Do half board plans include drinks?
Basic half board usually includes water with meals at most. Some resorts sell "half board plus" versions with a drink or two at dinner, as Centara Ras Fushi does with one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic house drink. Check which version your quote names.
