Moving from Maafushi to a Maldives resort

Splitting a trip between Maafushi and a resort is popular with Malaysians, and the move between them is the part that needs the most planning.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Most travellers move from Maafushi to a resort through Velana airport. Take the shared speedboat from Maafushi to the airport (listed at USD 25 per person), then join the resort's own speedboat or seaplane transfer. Some South Male atoll resorts may collect you directly from Maafushi by private boat, at a price, so ask. Avoid Fridays for the move unless both boats are confirmed.

Key facts

  • Maafushi shared speedboat

  • Public ferry Male to Maafushi

About 90 minutes to 2 hours

    Third-party guides, not on Fridays

  • Seaplane cut-off

    About 15:30 at the airport

The usual route goes through the airport

Resort transfers start at Velana International Airport, so the simplest way to move is to go back there. You take Maafushi's shared speedboat to the airport and meet the resort host at arrivals.

From there the resort's normal speedboat or seaplane takes you on. This works for any resort in the country, which is why most travellers use it.

For Maafushi itself, see the Maafushi island guide. For the general rules on switching islands, read moving between two resorts, and browse the transfers hub.

How to time the moving day

The resort's transfer type decides your latest arrival at the airport. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and Trans Maldivian asks guests to be at the airport by about 15:30.

Speedboat resorts are more flexible and may run until evening. Confirm the resort's last boat on your moving date.

Work backwards from that time. Take the earliest shared speedboat from Maafushi that leaves a comfortable buffer, and do not choose the last boat of the day for a seaplane resort.

A worked example: two nights on Maafushi, then a seaplane resort

This is an example plan for a couple flying in on the AirAsia morning flight. Boat departure times are placeholders to confirm with your guesthouse, not a timetable.

Two adults pay about USD 50 for that Maafushi to airport leg, roughly RM205 at RM4.09 per USD. Add the resort's own transfer price on top.

Our five-night itinerary with two nights on Maafushi then a resort lays out the full trip day by day.

When a direct boat makes sense

A direct private boat skips the airport and can save hours. It makes most sense for resorts in South Male atoll, close to Maafushi.

Ask the resort first whether it accepts guests arriving by an outside boat, and at which jetty and time. Then ask your guesthouse or the resort to quote the private boat per trip, not per person.

For groups of four or more, a private boat can cost about the same per person as two shared legs plus a resort transfer. For a couple, the airport route is usually cheaper.

Packages that include the move

Some Malaysian agencies sell Maafushi plus resort split stays with both boats included. HolidayGoGoGo's 5D4N Twin Island Honeymoon combined two nights at Arena Beach in Maafushi with two at Centara Ras Fushi, with return speedboats included, from RM4,609 to RM5,499 per person twin share, excluding flights (checked 11 Oct 2026).

A package removes the coordination work but fixes the dates and properties. Compare it with booking each part separately in the trip cost calculator.

Fridays, weather and other cautions

Avoid moving on a Friday if you can, because Friday is the main weekly day of rest. Shared speedboats from Maafushi usually still run, but with fewer departures, and public ferries generally do not.

In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, rough water can delay boats. Leave Maafushi on an early boat on moving day so a delay does not cost the resort transfer.

Questions to ask both properties

Ask your Maafushi guesthouse:

  • Which shared speedboat departures run to the airport on our moving date, and can you book seats now?
  • What time is checkout, and can we leave bags or shower if the boat is later?
  • Can you quote a private boat to our resort, and has the resort approved it?

Ask the resort:

  • What is the latest time we can meet your host at the airport on our arrival date?
  • Will you collect us from Maafushi directly, and at what price per boat?
  • If our boat from Maafushi is late, what happens to our transfer?

Written answers from both sides turn the moving day into a routine morning.

Who this split suits

It suits couples and friends who want local-island prices and excursions first, then a resort finish. It also suits Muslim travellers who like Maafushi's halal dining before a resort stay.

It suits families with toddlers less well, since the move adds two boat legs in one day. A single resort near Male is simpler for them. If you are also considering Dhigurah, read moving from Dhigurah to a resort.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a direct public ferry from Maafushi to resorts?
No. Public ferries link local islands and Male, not resort islands. Resorts control their own jetties and transfers. The only direct options are a private boat arranged by the resort, or one arranged by your guesthouse with the resort's agreement.
Can my guesthouse arrange a private boat to the resort?
Many Maafushi guesthouses and excursion operators can arrange a private speedboat to a nearby resort. Before you agree, check with the resort that it accepts arrivals by outside boats and at what time. Some resorts only allow their own transfers.
Do I need to check out early from my guesthouse?
Usually yes. Shared speedboats from Maafushi to the airport leave at fixed times, so your guesthouse will set an early checkout to match. Ask whether you can leave luggage or use a room if your boat is later.
What about Green Tax when I move?
Green Tax is charged per guest per night by each property. Guesthouses on inhabited islands with 50 or fewer rooms charge USD 6, and resorts charge USD 12. Each property bills its own nights, so the move itself adds no extra tax.
