Why three nights on a local island works

Three nights on a local island gives two full days in the water at a fraction of resort prices. Guesthouses on inhabited islands charge the lower Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, and room rates are much lower.

Day-by-day plan

Day 1: Morning flight and speedboat to Maafushi

Take the AirAsia flight landing around 09:50 or Malaysia Airlines around 11:25. Your guesthouse books the shared speedboat in advance and meets you at the jetty.

Check in, have a late lunch, and walk the village and bikini beach. Change money or use a card at the guesthouse; carry small US dollar notes for tips and snacks.

Day 2: Excursion day

Book a half-day or full-day trip through your guesthouse: snorkelling, a sandbank or a dolphin search. Put it on day two so day three can be the backup if the sea is rough.

Day 3: Free day or a resort day pass

Rest on the bikini beach, swim or join a second trip. Some nearby resorts sell day visits; ask your guesthouse what is available and what it includes.

Confirm tomorrow's speedboat time and checkout in the evening.

Day 4: Speedboat to the airport and fly home

The speedboat runs to fixed times, so your checkout follows the boat. Ask to leave bags at the guesthouse if your boat is later.

Local island rules for a short stay

• Alcohol is not sold on inhabited islands, and you cannot bring it into the country.
• Cover shoulders and knees in the village; wear swimwear on the bikini beach only.
• On Fridays, many shops close around midday for prayers and some public ferries do not run.
• Halal food is the norm, which many Malaysian Muslim travellers find easy.
