The short verdict
Maafushi is the easy first island: close to the airport, cheap to reach and full of excursions. Dhigurah is the nature island: further away, quieter, and inside the main whale shark area.
If you have 4 nights or fewer, the long Dhigurah boat ride eats too much of the holiday. If you have 5 or more, Dhigurah starts to pay back the travel time.
This page belongs to the comparisons and trade-offs hub. The local island travel hub covers guesthouse basics.

Matching the island to your flight
Your arrival time decides a lot. AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25 Maldives time, which fits the reported 11:00 or 16:00 Dhigurah boats.
Batik Air lands about 21:55. That is fine for Maafushi, where late boats run, but for Dhigurah you will usually need a night in Hulhumale first.
Transfer cost for two, worked out
Return speedboat transfers for two adults, before tips:
- Maafushi: USD 25 × 2 people × 2 ways = USD 100, about RM409 at RM4.09.
- Dhigurah: USD 50 to 65 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 260, about RM818 to RM1,063.
The Dhigurah transfer adds roughly RM400 to RM650 for a couple. Over a 5-night stay, that is a modest share of the trip. Over 3 nights, it is a large one.
Both islands' smaller guesthouses charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night. For a full budget, use the trip cost calculator.
Whale sharks: what Dhigurah really offers
Dhigurah sits in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where Visit Maldives reports whale sharks year-round, with most sightings from August to November. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to them.
Sightings are never guaranteed. Staying several nights gives you more than one chance, which a single long day trip from Maafushi cannot.
What a day feels like on each island
On Maafushi, mornings start with an excursion boat leaving the harbour for a sandbank, a snorkel site or a resort day pass. Evenings are spent walking between cafes along streets lined with guesthouses.
The island is small and built up, so you are rarely far from other visitors. Many first-timers like that energy, because help, food and activities are always close.
On Dhigurah, the pace is slower. Days revolve around the long beach and sandbank, the house reef and a whale shark trip or two.
There are fewer places to eat, so many guesthouses offer meal plans. Ask yours what is included before you pay, and whether it can cater for children or dietary needs.
Money and cash on each island
Both islands work mostly in US dollars and rufiyaa. Guesthouses often take cards, but small excursion operators and cafes may prefer cash.
Carry small US dollar notes for tips and boat fares. Check with your guesthouse about ATMs and card payment before you go, since this changes as islands grow.
A night-by-night rule for first-timers
- 3 nights: Maafushi. Use day one for arrival and a snorkel trip, day two for a sandbank or resort day pass.
- 4 nights: Maafushi, or Dhigurah only if you land in the morning and whale sharks are the main goal.
- 5 nights: Dhigurah if nature and calm appeal, Maafushi if you want variety and nightlife-style evenings.
- 6 nights or more: Consider both, or Dhigurah followed by a resort, covered in moving from Dhigurah to a resort.
Who each island suits
Maafushi suits first-timers on a short trip, friend groups, solo travellers and anyone landing late. It also suits older travellers who prefer a short boat ride.
Dhigurah suits snorkellers, couples who want quiet, and families with older children who will enjoy whale sharks and the sandbank. Couples can read Dhigurah versus Thoddoo for a couple, and beach lovers Dhigurah versus Ukulhas for quiet beaches.
If neither feels right, the Dhigurah travel guide and the Maafushi travel guide go deeper on each.
