Where is Meemu, and what is it like?

Meemu lies south of Vaavu in the central Maldives. The government atoll portal names it Mulaku Atholhu, matching the natural atoll also known as Mulak Atoll.

It is one of the quieter atolls, with few resorts and small local islands. Meemu appeals to travellers who want distance from the busier atolls around Male. For context, see our atolls and regions hub.

How do you get to Meemu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a seaplane. A domestic flight to Muli exists but runs rarely.

Seaplanes need you in Male by about 15:30, so AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines arrivals work, and Batik Air needs a night near Male. More in getting to Meemu from Male airport.

The new Muli Airport

President Muizzu opened Muli Airport on 20 May 2025, according to Atoll Times. It has a 1,200 m runway and a terminal for about 150 passengers.

Maldivian launched a weekly Saturday flight of about 35 minutes, leaving Male at 15:30 at launch. Treat the airport as a future option rather than a reliable route today, and confirm the timetable directly with the airline.

Where to stay in Meemu

• Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa: a long-running resort with water bungalows, reached by seaplane.
• Medhufushi Island Resort: a seaplane resort with beach and water villas listed by booking sites.
• Other resorts: travel guides also name Madifushi Private Island. Confirm its current status and transfer with the resort before planning.
• Muli guesthouses: travel guides describe Muli as the most developed local island for tourism, but we found no official guesthouse or council source.

Diving and reefs

Travel guides describe channel and thila dives such as Hakuraa Thila, Medhu Faru and Muli Kandu, with reef sharks and drift diving. Fewer boats visit than in Ari or Kaafu.

Check with your resort dive centre which sites it uses and how it handles strong currents. Meemu also appears on some liveaboard routes heading south.

How long to stay in Meemu

Four nights is a sensible minimum. The seaplane takes up part of the arrival and departure days, so a three-night stay leaves only two full days on the island.

Divers and honeymooners often stay five to seven nights. A longer stay also gives you room if weather delays a seaplane at either end.

What to ask a Meemu resort before booking

• Which transfer do you use, and what is the price per adult and child, including tax?
• If my flight lands late, do you arrange a night in Male?
• Which villa types are on the beach and which over water?
• Which meal plans do you offer, and which outlets serve halal food?
• Is there a house reef, and does the dive centre visit the channels?

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

• Halal food: ask the resort in writing which outlets serve halal food.
• Weather: seaplanes can be delayed in poor weather; build in time on your last day.
• Taxes: Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night at resorts.
• Luggage: Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage.

Who Meemu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Meemu suits honeymooners and couples who want a calm resort, families who prefer a small island, and divers seeking quieter channels. It suits travellers happy to pay for a seaplane.
