Dhaalu atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You want a resort atoll with a real choice of price levels and a transfer that still works if your flight lands late.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Dhaalu is a resort-led atoll south-west of Male with its own domestic airport on Kudahuvadhoo. Resorts range from Kandima, a large lifestyle resort, to Niyama Private Islands and The St. Regis Vommuli. Most guests fly about 25 to 45 minutes to Dhaalu Airport and finish by speedboat, which is useful when a seaplane would miss its daylight cut-off. A few inhabited islands also have guesthouses.

Dhaalu is the southern half of Nilandhe Atoll and one of the easier resort atolls to reach from Male, because it has its own airport. It offers more choice of resorts than its northern neighbour, Faafu.

For how Dhaalu compares with other regions, see our atolls and regions hub. This page covers what the atoll offers and who it suits.

Where is Dhaalu, and what makes it different?

Dhaalu lies south-west of Male, south of Faafu. The government atoll portal names it Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi, or South Nilandhe.

Its key difference is Dhaalu Airport (DDD) on Kudahuvadhoo, which opened in 2017. Wheeled domestic aircraft land there, so resort guests are not tied to daylight seaplanes, which helps when an international flight lands late.

Which resorts are in Dhaalu?

Dhaalu has a broad spread of resorts, from large lifestyle islands to private-island luxury. Travel guides and resort operators list these among them:

ResortStyleUsual transfer
Kandima MaldivesLarge lifestyle resort, many room typesFlight to Dhaalu, then about 15 to 20 min speedboat
Niyama Private IslandsTwo-island luxury resortFlight plus about 5 to 10 min boat, or seaplane about 40 to 50 min
The St. Regis Maldives VommuliUltra-luxury villasSeaplane, or flight plus boat
Angsana VelavaruMid to upper luxury, beach and water villasAsk the resort
Sun Siyam Vilu ReefMid-range resortAsk the resort

Transfer times come from tour operator and booking listings and vary by source. Confirm the exact route with your resort. Our St. Regis Vommuli planning profile and Angsana Velavaru planning profile go deeper.

Local islands and guesthouses

Dhaalu is mainly a resort atoll, but a few inhabited islands host guesthouses. Travel guides name Kudahuvadhoo, Meedhoo, Rinbudhoo and Hulhudheli.

Kudahuvadhoo is the airport island and is described as the atoll capital by travel guides, though we have not confirmed this on an official page. See our Kudahuvadhoo visitor guide for what a stay there involves.

Guesthouse choice is small and details come mostly from booking listings. Confirm registration, meals and excursions before paying.

How do you get to Dhaalu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a domestic flight to Dhaalu Airport and a speedboat, or a seaplane where your resort offers one.

AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) connect easily either way. Batik Air lands about 21:55, after seaplanes stop, so ask whether your resort runs evening domestic flights. Full detail is in getting to Dhaalu from Male airport.

Diving, reefs and safety

Dhaalu has channel and reef diving, with travel guides naming sites such as Fushi Kandu, Kudarah Thila and Lion's Head. Many resorts run dive centres; ask about beginner courses and child age limits.

Kandima has operated a hyperbaric chamber since November 2021, one of only two chambers we have confirmed in the country (the other is ADK Hospital in Male).

We found no official marine protected area for Dhaalu, so none is listed on this page.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Halal food: resorts serve international menus. Ask in writing which outlets and dishes are halal; do not assume.
  • Prayer: ask resorts for a prayer mat and qibla direction; local islands have mosques.
  • Dress: on Kudahuvadhoo and other local islands, cover shoulders and knees.
  • Green Tax: USD 12 per guest per night at resorts, USD 6 at registered guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer. Under 2s exempt.
  • Taxes: GST of 17% plus a usual 10% service charge add about 28.7% to a pre-tax room rate.

Use the trip cost calculator to turn a resort rate into a ringgit total.

How long to stay, and when to go

Three to four nights suits most Dhaalu resort stays, since the transfer is short. Divers and families often prefer five.

The drier northeast monsoon, about December to April, brings calmer seas and clearer water. The southwest monsoon, about May to November, is wetter but often cheaper.

Who Dhaalu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Dhaalu suits families who want a large, activity-rich resort, honeymooners after a private-island villa, and anyone whose flight lands too late for a seaplane elsewhere. It also suits divers who value a nearby chamber.

It suits less well if you want a lively guesthouse island or the cheapest possible trip, since transfers add cost. For budget village stays, look at islands closer to Male, or compare a local island versus resort stay in Dhaalu. Times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Can I reach a Dhaalu resort if I land at Male at night?
Sometimes. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, but Dhaalu Airport takes wheeled domestic aircraft, and some resorts arrange evening domestic flights. Whether a flight runs after a Batik Air arrival around 21:55 depends on the resort and the day, so ask the resort in writing before you book, and budget a Hulhumale night if they cannot confirm.
Is Dhaalu good for divers?
Yes, for relaxed reef and channel diving. Travel guides list named sites such as Fushi Kandu and Lion's Head, and several resorts run their own dive centres. Kandima also has a hyperbaric chamber, which some divers find reassuring. Check each resort's dive operator, courses for beginners and minimum ages directly.
Which Dhaalu resort is best for a Malaysian family?
It depends on budget and the ages of your children. Larger resorts such as Kandima offer more activities and room types, while private-island luxury resorts suit families wanting a villa with a pool. Ask each resort about kids' clubs, connecting rooms and halal options, then send us your brief for a comparison.
Is there a bikini beach on Kudahuvadhoo?
We have not confirmed a designated bikini beach on Kudahuvadhoo or the other guesthouse islands from an official source. Ask your guesthouse before booking if beach time matters to you, and dress modestly in the village, covering shoulders and knees.
