Vaavu atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You want a quiet atoll close to Male with strong diving and simple island life, and need to know whether Vaavu fits.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

Vaavu is a small, quiet atoll south of Male, known for channel dives such as Fotteyo Kandu and Miyaru Kandu. Resorts like Cinnamon Velifushi are about 90 minutes by speedboat or 20 to 25 minutes by seaplane, and guesthouse islands such as Fulidhoo and Keyodhoo are roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by shared speedboat. It suits divers and travellers who prefer a slow, uncrowded stay.

Where is Vaavu, and what is it like?

Vaavu lies south of Male, next to Kaafu and north of Meemu. The government atoll portal names it Felidhe Atholhu and notes that it covers Felidhu Atoll and the separate Vattaru Reef.

It is one of the least populated atolls, with only a handful of inhabited islands. That gives Vaavu a slow, village feel, with few boats and few crowds. For context among the other regions, see our atolls and regions hub.

Diving and snorkelling in Vaavu

Vaavu's reputation rests on its channels, called kandu. Fotteyo Kandu is often described as one of the best channel dives in the Maldives, with overhangs, caves, grey reef sharks and eagle rays.

Miyaru Kandu, the "shark channel", is another favourite. Both have strong currents and suit experienced divers, so check conditions with your dive centre. Snorkellers often see nurse sharks and stingrays near island jetties; read the Fulidhoo island guide for one example. Divers wanting several atolls in one trip could also compare a Maldives liveaboard, since many routes pass through Vaavu.

How do you get to Vaavu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a speedboat or a seaplane. Vaavu has no domestic airport.

Morning KLIA flights connect easily. A Batik Air arrival at about 21:55 needs a night near Male. More in getting to Vaavu from Male airport.

Where to stay in Vaavu

  • Resorts: Cinnamon Velifushi, and the long-running Alimatha and Dhiggiri dive resorts, which travel guides now list under the NAKAI brand. Confirm the current name with the resort before booking.
  • Fulidhoo: the best-known guesthouse island, small and walkable, with a bikini beach described by guesthouses.
  • Keyodhoo and Thinadhoo: smaller guesthouse scenes, popular with divers.
  • Felidhoo: described as the atoll capital by travel guides, with a few guesthouses.

Guide listings checked October 2026 show around 25 guesthouses on Fulidhoo and 17 on Keyodhoo. Our Vaavu local island versus resort comparison weighs the choice.

What a Vaavu day looks like

On a guesthouse island, most days start early with a boat trip to a channel, a reef or a sandbank. Afternoons are slow: a swim at the bikini beach, a walk around the village or snorkelling by the jetty.

At a resort, the rhythm is set by the beach, the pool and the dive centre's schedule. Vaavu resorts are small, so evenings are quiet compared with larger resorts near Male.

Divers should log their recent dives and bring certification cards, since channel sites often need experience. Non-divers can still enjoy guided snorkelling trips and sandbank picnics arranged by guesthouses.

How long to stay

Three nights suits a quiet guesthouse break with snorkelling. Divers usually want four or five nights to allow for weather and current changes on the channels.

Vaavu also pairs well with Maafushi in Kaafu for a two-island trip. See moving between Maafushi and Fulidhoo.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Cash: travel guides report no ATM on Fulidhoo, so carry US dollars.
  • Halal food: local-island guesthouses serve food without pork or alcohol; at resorts, ask which outlets are halal.
  • Dress: cover shoulders and knees away from the bikini beach.
  • Sea conditions: the southwest monsoon, about May to November, can make the open crossing from Male rough.
  • Green Tax: USD 6 per guest per night at registered guesthouses, USD 12 at resorts.

Who Vaavu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Vaavu suits divers, couples who want a quiet guesthouse island, and travellers adding a second island to a Maafushi trip. Families with confident swimmers enjoy the jetty marine life.

Choose elsewhere if you want whale sharks, which point to the South Ari atoll guide, or a large resort with many restaurants. Transfer times change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Vaavu good for beginner divers?
Partly. The famous channels such as Fotteyo Kandu have strong currents and are usually recommended for experienced divers. Beginners can still learn and dive calmer reefs inside the atoll with a local dive centre. Ask the centre which sites match your certification and how they decide on currents each day.
Is there an ATM on Fulidhoo?
Travel guides report no ATM on Fulidhoo, so bring enough US dollars or withdraw rufiyaa at Male airport before you leave. Many guesthouses accept cards, but small shops and boat crews often prefer cash. Confirm payment options with your guesthouse before arrival.
Can I visit Vaavu as a day trip from Maafushi?
Yes. Some Maafushi guesthouses sell excursions to Fulidhoo, and a public ferry links the two islands on some weekdays. A day trip gives a taste of the quieter island, but staying two or three nights lets you dive or snorkel the channels properly.
Are there whale sharks or mantas in Vaavu?
They are not what Vaavu is known for. The atoll's draw is reef sharks, eagle rays and nurse sharks in the channels and at some jetties. If whale sharks are the goal, South Ari is the better base, and Baa is the classic manta atoll in season.
