Proof of funds for tourists entering the Maldives

You want to know how much money you must show at Maldives immigration and what form that proof should take.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Maldives Immigration asks tourists to have sufficient funds for their stay, or an approved sponsorship, but publishes no fixed amount and no bank statement rule. Officers rarely ask holidaymakers with a prepaid booking. Carry a working international card plus some US dollar cash, and be able to show a banking app balance if asked. Cash above USD 10,000 should be declared.

Sufficient funds to cover the stay

    RM4.09 per USD

There is no fixed proof-of-funds amount for the Maldives. You need enough money for your stay, and a card plus a banking app balance is the usual way to show it.

This is one of five conditions in the Maldives visa on arrival guide. Other paperwork topics are in the entry and travel paperwork hub.

What does Maldives Immigration require?

The tourist visa page asks for sufficient funds to cover the stay, or a sponsorship approved by Maldives Immigration. It gives no amount per day and no required document.

That leaves the judgement with the officer. In practice, a tourist with a prepaid booking, a return ticket and a working card is rarely questioned about money.

What counts as proof, from strongest to weakest

The more of your trip is already paid, the less you need to show. Use this list to decide what to carry.

  1. A prepaid package or resort voucher showing meals and transfers included.
  2. An international credit or debit card enabled for overseas use.
  3. A banking app on your phone that can show your balance offline or with data.
  4. US dollar cash for tips, small purchases and guesthouse extras.
  5. A recent e-statement saved as a PDF, as a backup only.

None of these is mandatory on its own. Together they answer any reasonable question in a few seconds.

How much will you still need in the Maldives?

The honest answer is the cost of everything you have not prepaid. That depends heavily on your meal plan and where you stay.

The table shows what typically remains after booking, and who it is billed by.

Check your confirmation to see whether Green Tax is included. If it is not, it is paid at the property.

A worked example: what a guesthouse couple still pays

A couple stays 5 nights at a small guesthouse on an inhabited island, with breakfast prepaid. Green Tax there is USD 6 per guest per night.

Green Tax: 2 guests x 5 nights x USD 6 = USD 60, about RM245 at RM4.09 per USD. Lunches, dinners and excursions come on top, and you should estimate them from the guesthouse's own price list.

Showing a card and a banking app balance comfortably covering those costs is all the "proof" a guesthouse traveller realistically needs. Our trip cost calculator helps you set that number.

Cash rules and practical money tips

Cash above USD 10,000, or the equivalent, should be declared on arrival. That figure comes from a secondary customs summary, so check with Maldives Customs if you plan to carry anything close to it.

Most holidaymakers need far less. US dollars are widely used, and clean, recent notes are easier to spend.

Tell your bank you are travelling, and carry two cards from different banks in case one is blocked. Resorts often take a card deposit at check-in.

If an officer asks about money

Answer simply and show rather than explain. Open your booking voucher, then your banking app balance or card, and say how many nights you are staying.

Officers are checking that your plan holds together. A prepaid stay, a confirmed return and a card that matches the traveller's name usually settle it in under a minute.

Avoid relying on a relative's card or someone else's account. If a family member is paying, the card holder should travel with you, or the booking should already be fully paid.

Who should prepare more carefully

Budget travellers on local islands rely more on cash and card spending, so should carry clear evidence of funds. Long-stay travellers and solo travellers with open plans also face more questions.

Honeymooners on all-inclusive packages and families on full-board resort stays have most costs prepaid. A card and the voucher are normally enough.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need to print a bank statement for the Maldives?
The official tourist visa page does not ask for one. A banking app showing your balance, or a recent e-statement saved on your phone, is enough to answer a question at the counter. Travellers whose trip is mostly paid in advance are seldom asked at all, so a printed statement is optional.
Is a credit card enough proof of funds?
Usually, yes, together with your prepaid booking. The officer is checking that you can pay for your stay, not auditing your finances. Make sure your card is enabled for overseas use and that your bank will not block the first foreign charge, because resorts often take a deposit at check-in.
Should I bring ringgit to the Maldives?
Ringgit is not widely accepted in the Maldives. Resorts usually bill in US dollars and take cards, and guesthouses and local shops often accept US dollars or Maldivian rufiyaa. Change some ringgit to US dollars in Malaysia before you fly.
Does a sponsor count instead of funds?
The official page allows a sponsorship approved by Maldives Immigration as an alternative. That is a formal arrangement made in advance, not a letter from a friend. Most Malaysian holidaymakers rely on their own funds and prepaid booking instead.
