You need a prepaid, confirmed booking at a registered tourist facility. In practice that means a paid booking at a licensed resort, hotel or guesthouse for every night of your stay.
This is one of five entry conditions in the Maldives visa on arrival guide. Every related topic is in the entry and travel paperwork hub.
What does the rule actually say?
Maldives Immigration asks for a complete travel itinerary that includes a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility. The alternative is a sponsorship approved by Maldives Immigration.
Three words carry the weight. "Prepaid" means you have paid. "Confirmed" means the property has accepted it. "Registered" means the property is licensed for tourists.
The officer may not ask to see it at all. If they do, you should be able to show it in under a minute.
Which bookings pass and which cause trouble
Use this table to check your own booking. It applies to resorts, city hotels and local-island guesthouses alike.
| Your booking | Likely outcome | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Resort or package, fully paid, voucher in hand | Meets the rule | Carry voucher and resort confirmation |
| Guesthouse on a local island, paid online | Meets the rule | Use the registered name on IMUGA too |
| Deposit paid, balance due at check-in | Usually fine, but not "fully prepaid" | Ask the property for a confirmation showing deposit and booking status |
| "Reserve now, pay at property" | Weakest position | Switch to a paid rate before you fly |
| Private home or holiday rental not registered for tourists | Does not fit the tourist route | Book a registered property, or arrange approved sponsorship |
| Paid stay with a night missing before the flight | Gap may be questioned | Book the transit night in Male or Hulhumale |
What your confirmation should show
A good confirmation answers the officer's questions without you needing to explain. Check yours has:
- The full name of every traveller, matching passports.
- The registered property name, island and atoll.
- Check-in and check-out dates that match your flights.
- Paid or prepaid status, or a receipt alongside it.
- A booking reference and the property's contact details.
Keep a copy offline on your phone and one printout per family or group. Wi-Fi in the arrival hall is not something to rely on.
How to check a property is registered
Resorts and most established hotels are registered tourist facilities. The question comes up mainly with small guesthouses and new listings on booking platforms.
The simplest check is to ask the property for its tourism registration or licence details before you pay. You can also look for it in listings from the Maldives Ministry of Tourism.
Be cautious with listings that have no reviews, ask for payment by personal bank transfer, or describe themselves as a "home stay" with a local family. Those are the stays most likely to fall outside the rule.
Split stays and transit nights
Many Malaysian travellers combine two places: a local island and a resort, or a resort and a night in Hulhumale. Each part needs its own paid confirmation.
Late arrivals are a common reason for a transit night. Batik Air lands in Male at about 21:55, after seaplanes stop flying, so travellers to seaplane resorts usually need a Male or Hulhumale hotel that night.
On IMUGA, enter the first property you will stay at. Keep all the confirmations together in date order.
Liveaboards and dive trips
Divers on a liveaboard should carry the operator's paid confirmation for the cruise dates, plus any hotel nights before boarding or after leaving the boat.
The official page does not list vessel types by name, so ask the operator to confirm it is registered for tourists and that its confirmation is accepted for entry. Reputable operators deal with this question every week.
What if plans change after you land?
Moving from one property to another during the trip is normal. The rule is about arriving with a complete, paid plan, not about never changing it.
If you extend your stay, book and pay the extra nights before your original booking ends, and keep the new confirmation with your passport. Remember that your visa stamp sets the latest date you can stay.
Who should take extra care
Budget travellers booking local-island guesthouses directly are most likely to hit the pay-later or registration questions. Families should check the booking lists every child.
Honeymooners on packages are usually covered by the agent's voucher, but should still carry it. Group trips split across rooms should have each room's confirmation, or one voucher that lists everyone.
Accommodation is only half of the itinerary rule. Read what Maldives Immigration expects for proof of return travel, and our guide on what a Maldives trip costs from Malaysia when you price the stay.
Questions travellers ask
Is a booking made through Agoda, Booking.com or Traveloka acceptable?
Do I need accommodation for every night?
Can I stay with friends or family in the Maldives?
My travel agent has the booking. What do I show?
