What does full board mean at a Maldives resort?

Your package says full board and you want to know exactly which meals, drinks and restaurants that covers.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Full board at a Maldives resort means three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, normally at the main restaurant. Drinks other than water are usually extra, and speciality restaurants, room service and the minibar are usually excluded. Each resort writes its own rules, so read the plan's terms before you assume a meal or drink is covered.

What full board means in plain words

Full board means the resort serves you breakfast, lunch and dinner each day of your stay. It is the meal plan in the middle of the usual ladder: room only, bed and breakfast, half board, full board, then all-inclusive.

The label is common, but the rules behind it are not standard across resorts. Two resorts can both say "full board" and differ on drinks, venues and children. That is why this page gives you a checklist rather than a single definition. For how meal plans fit the wider budget, see our Budget and Real Cost hub.

What full board usually covers, and what it usually does not

The table reflects two resorts' official meal plan pages, both checked on 12 October 2026, and is a guide to what to ask, not a promise for any other resort.

The eight questions to ask before you accept full board

Send these to the resort or your travel provider and keep the reply. Each one closes a gap that commonly causes a surprise bill.

  1. Which restaurants can we use for lunch and dinner, and is it buffet or set menu?
  2. Are any drinks included beyond water, and at which meals?
  3. Is room service or in-villa dining covered at all?
  4. What do children pay, and at what ages does the adult rate start?
  5. Must everyone in the booking be on the same plan?
  6. Can we take a packed lunch on excursion days?
  7. Is the plan priced "++", or already including service charge and GST?
  8. What does the halal claim cover, if halal food matters to you?

Question five matters more than people expect. Hard Rock's terms say every room in a booking must be on the same plan for the whole stay, so you cannot mix plans between travellers or nights.

What full board costs, with taxes in ringgit

Hard Rock Hotel Maldives lists full board at USD 160++ per person per day, checked on 12 October 2026. With 10% service charge and 17% tourism GST, that becomes 160 x 1.287 = about USD 206.

At RM4.09 per USD, that is about RM842 per person per day. For a couple over three nights the arithmetic is 842 x 2 x 3 = about RM5,052 on top of the room.

Malaysian packages often fold the meal plan into the per-person price instead. AF Travel's Le Meridien Thilamaafushi 4D3N package, checked on 11 October 2026, lists full board with non-alcoholic drinks within its RM8,696 per adult twin-share price for 1 October to 23 December 2026. That makes full board easier to budget, because the meals are paid before you fly.

Who full board suits, and who should look elsewhere

Full board suits families with children who eat three proper meals a day, travellers who do not drink alcohol, and anyone staying at a resort far from other islands. It also suits older travellers who prefer not to decide on meals or watch prices every day.

It is less suited to couples who drink wine or cocktails with dinner, because drinks are where full board stops. For them all-inclusive can work out close in cost, as our all-inclusive versus full board comparison shows.

Light eaters and travellers on excursion-heavy days often do better on half board. If you are weighing those two, the ringgit maths is on our page about half board versus full board costs.

How to compare full board quotes fairly

Put every quote on the same basis: per person, per day, with service charge and GST included, and the same list of drinks and venues. Only then is a cheaper plan actually cheaper.

If one package includes full board and another sells it as an add-on, convert the add-on with the 1.287 multiplier before comparing. Then run both through the trip cost calculator, so the meal plan sits beside flights, transfers and Green Tax.

Questions travellers ask

Is full board the same as all-inclusive?
No. Full board covers meals. All-inclusive adds drinks, often including alcohol by the glass, and sometimes snacks, afternoon tea or activities. At Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, for example, all-inclusive is USD 210++ per person per day against USD 160++ for full board. Our all-inclusive versus full board comparison covers when the gap pays off.
Is halal food included on full board?
Full board decides how many meals you get, not what kind of food is served. Whether the meat is halal depends on the resort's sourcing and kitchen policy. Ask the resort what its halal claim covers, and whether every buffet and set menu on your plan follows it.
Can I swap lunch for a packed meal on excursion days?
Many resorts allow a packed lunch or a meal credit on full-day trips, but it is a courtesy, not a rule. Ask at check-in and give the restaurant notice the evening before. Unused meals are usually not refunded, as Hard Rock's published terms state for its plans.
Do I need full board on a local island?
Local island guesthouses sometimes offer full board, often cheaper than resort plans, but you also have cafes within walking distance. Many travellers on Maafushi or Thulusdhoo take breakfast only or half board and eat lunch out. Full board matters more on a resort island, where every meal comes from the resort.
