Alifu Alifu (North Ari): local island versus resort holiday options

You want North Ari and are deciding between a guesthouse island and a resort like Kuramathi.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

North Ari offers a real choice. Rasdhoo suits divers on a budget, Ukulhas suits beach lovers who want a calm local island, and Thoddoo suits those wanting a quieter farming island. A resort such as Kuramathi gives a private beach, family facilities and alcohol at a much higher price. Divers and budget travellers lean local island; honeymooners and families with young children usually lean resort.

The verdict by traveller type

North Ari is one of the best atolls for a real guesthouse-or-resort choice. Use this list first, then the table.

  • Divers on a budget: Rasdhoo, with several dive centres and the hammerhead channel nearby.
  • Beach lovers on a budget: Ukulhas, quieter with a well-known beach.
  • Slow travellers: Thoddoo, a larger farming island.
  • Honeymooners: a resort such as Kuramathi.
  • Families with young children: a resort usually, for facilities and an easier transfer.

For the atoll overview, see the North Ari atoll guide.

The local island option in practice

Rasdhoo is built around diving. Wikivoyage lists 16 basic guesthouses, a small bikini beach, a Bank of Maldives ATM and several dive centres, with the hammerhead dive at Rasdhoo Madivaru close by. See the Rasdhoo island guide.

Ukulhas is calmer and suits beach days and snorkel trips; read the Ukulhas island guide. On every local island, cover shoulders and knees in the village and expect a quieter Friday.

The resort option in practice

Kuramathi, marketed as Niva Kuramathi Maldives, is a large resort on Rasdhoo Atoll, reached by seaplane or speedboat. You get private beaches, villas, restaurants and organised diving and excursions.

The trade-off is cost, and the seaplane's daylight window of about 06:00 to 15:30. See the Kuramathi profile.

How a day differs in each

On Rasdhoo, a diver's day can start before dawn with the hammerhead dive, followed by breakfast and a second reef dive. Afternoons are quiet, with time on the bikini beach or a walk through the village.

On Ukulhas, days are slower: a morning snorkel trip, lunch at the guesthouse and the afternoon on the beach. Evenings are calm, with simple dinners and an early night.

At a resort, the rhythm is set by your villa, the house reef and the restaurants. Excursions leave from your own jetty, and there are no dress rules beyond the resort's own.

What to check before you choose

  • For guesthouses: how close is the bikini beach, and which dive centre do they work with?
  • Is airport pickup included, and what time does the shared boat leave?
  • For resorts: which outlets are halal, is there a kids' club, and is the transfer seaplane or speedboat?
  • For divers: is the hammerhead trip suitable for your certification level?

A split stay

North Ari makes a split stay easy. Two or three nights on Rasdhoo for diving, then a move to Ukulhas for beach time, works well for budget travellers.

Another option is guesthouse nights first and a resort at the end. Ask the resort for a transfer from your guesthouse island rather than paying a full transfer from Male.

Count Green Tax and service charges separately for each property, because guesthouse and resort rates differ. A short final resort stay also gives you a calmer last night before the trip home, with luggage handled by the resort team.

Who each choice suits, and when to look elsewhere

A local island suits divers, budget travellers and anyone who enjoys local life without alcohol. A resort suits couples and families who want privacy, space and facilities.

If you want whale sharks, South Ari is the better base. If you want the shortest transfer, compare Kaafu local island versus resort. Prices and boat schedules change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Can I stay on Rasdhoo and visit Kuramathi?
Rasdhoo and Kuramathi share the same small atoll, so they are close. Some guesthouses arrange resort day visits, but access depends on the resort's day-pass policy and is not guaranteed. Ask your guesthouse whether a Kuramathi day visit is currently offered and what it includes.
Which North Ari island has the best beach?
Ukulhas is often described as having a long, well-kept beach, which is why beach-focused travellers choose it. Rasdhoo's bikini beach is small, and Wikivoyage notes the nearby reef is under pressure from tourism. Visit the island guides for details before you decide.
Is a guesthouse stay comfortable for older travellers?
Yes, if they are comfortable with simple rooms, short walks on sand roads and a shared speedboat crossing. Ask for a ground-floor room and confirm airport pickup. If mobility or seasickness is a concern, a resort reached by seaplane may be easier.
Do North Ari guesthouses serve halal food?
Pork and alcohol are not allowed on inhabited islands, and guesthouse meals are typically Maldivian and international dishes. If you need a formal halal assurance, ask the guesthouse directly. At resorts, ask in writing which outlets are halal.
