Where is North Ari, and what is it like?
North Ari sits west of Male across the open channel. The government atoll portal lists it as Ari Atholhu Uthuruburi and notes it was created on 1 March 1984 from the northern part of Ari Atoll. The small, separate Rasdhoo Atoll on its eastern side is part of it.
It feels one step more remote than Male Atoll, with fewer boats on the horizon. For how it fits with other regions, see our atolls and regions hub.
The guesthouse islands
North Ari has three well-known guesthouse islands, each with its own character.
| Island | Character | Getting there | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rasdhoo | Dive base, many small guesthouses, bikini beach | Shared speedboat under 1 h; public ferry on some days | Wikivoyage |
| Ukulhas | Clean beach island, quieter | Shared speedboat about 50 to 90 min, USD 50 one way (March 2024) | Wikivoyage |
| Thoddoo | Farming island, known for fruit, larger | Speedboat, or public boat from Rasdhoo | Wikivoyage |
Wikivoyage lists 16 guesthouses on Rasdhoo, generally basic, with a small bikini beach, a Bank of Maldives ATM and several dive centres. Details in the Rasdhoo island guide, the Ukulhas island guide and the Thoddoo island guide.
Resorts in North Ari
Kuramathi, now marketed as Niva Kuramathi Maldives, is the best-known resort here and shares Rasdhoo Atoll with the local island of Rasdhoo. It is a large island resort, about 20 to 25 minutes by seaplane or 75 to 90 minutes by speedboat, per resort-focused listings.
Veligandu is another North Ari resort in our directory. See the Kuramathi profile for transfer and villa details.
Diving: hammerheads and channels
North Ari's headline dive is Rasdhoo Madivaru, also called Hammerhead Point. Dive guides describe scalloped hammerheads that rise from the depths around dawn on the outer reef, along with grey reef sharks, eagle rays and tuna in the channel.
Nearby Madivaru Corner is noted for drift dives and manta cleaning stations in the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October. These are current-swept sites, so they suit certified, experienced divers. Beginners can train with Rasdhoo's dive centres on calmer reefs first.
How do you get there from KLIA?
Fly KLIA to Male, then take a speedboat or seaplane. North Ari has no domestic airport.
AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals connect to shared speedboats and seaplanes the same day. Batik Air (about 21:55) usually needs a night in Hulhumale first. Full details are in getting to North Ari from Male airport.
How long to stay, and a sample split
Four nights is a comfortable minimum for North Ari, because the transfer takes longer than in Kaafu and boats may not run every day. Five or six nights lets you combine two islands.
A simple pattern for divers is three nights on Rasdhoo for the dive centres and the hammerhead channel, then two nights on Ukulhas for beach time. Non-divers can reverse the emphasis, spending most nights on Ukulhas with a day trip for snorkelling.
Check the inter-island boat days before fixing the split. Fridays are usually quiet, so avoid planning a move on that day.
Families, older travellers and honeymooners
Families with confident swimmers enjoy North Ari's snorkel trips and quieter beaches. With toddlers, the longer speedboat can be tiring, so a seaplane resort or a Kaafu island may be easier.
Older travellers should plan for sandy roads and simple guesthouse rooms, or choose a resort. Honeymooners on a budget can pair a guesthouse with a final resort night.
Practical notes for Malaysian travellers
- Dress on local islands: cover shoulders and knees; swimwear only on the bikini beach.
- Cash: bring US dollars in small notes; card acceptance is patchy on local islands.
- Fridays: public boats usually do not run.
- Taxes: Green Tax is USD 6 per guest per night at small registered guesthouses and USD 12 at resorts.
- Food: local islands have no pork or alcohol; at resorts, ask which outlets are halal.
Who North Ari suits, and when to choose elsewhere
North Ari suits divers, island hoppers who want two or three local islands in one trip, and couples who want a resort a little farther from Male without a long flight. Ukulhas suits travellers who want a cleaner, calmer beach island.
Choose differently if you want whale sharks, which are a South Ari speciality, or the shortest possible transfer, which is Kaafu; see the Kaafu atoll guide. Boat times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.
