Baa: local island versus resort holiday options

You want Baa's mantas and reefs and are deciding between a guesthouse on a local island and a resort.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Baa is one of the few northern atolls where both choices are real. A guesthouse on Dharavandhoo puts you next to the airport and minutes from Hanifaru Bay at a fraction of resort transfer costs. A resort gives you a private beach, house reef, alcohol and family facilities, at a much higher price. Manta seekers on a budget lean local island; honeymooners and families with young children usually lean resort.

The verdict by traveller type

Baa gives you a real choice. Use this list first, then the table.

  • Manta seekers on a budget, June to November: a Dharavandhoo guesthouse, minutes from Hanifaru.
  • Honeymooners: a Baa resort for privacy, a house reef and villa space.
  • Families with young children: a resort usually, for kids' facilities and a calm lagoon.
  • Muslim families who want a local atmosphere: a guesthouse fits naturally, with no alcohol on the island.
  • Divers: either works; check the dive centre first.

The local island option in practice

Dharavandhoo has Baa's domestic airport, so you land and reach your guesthouse within minutes. Guesthouses describe a designated bikini beach and Hanifaru trips about 5 minutes away by boat.

Maalhos, 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat, is quieter and noted by guesthouses for its house reef. Daily life follows local custom: modest dress in the village, no alcohol, and quieter Fridays. Read the Dharavandhoo island guide and how to choose a Dharavandhoo guesthouse.

The resort option in practice

Baa resorts include Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Anantara Kihavah. You get a private island, villa space, a house reef at many resorts, and organised Hanifaru trips with licensed guides.

The trade-off is cost. On Soneva Fushi's 2026 rates, a couple pays USD 1,200 return for the domestic flight transfer alone (2 x 600), about RM4,908 at RM4.09, before any room. See the Soneva Fushi profile.

Green Tax alone shows how the bill differs, before rooms, meals or transfers.

How a day differs in each

On Dharavandhoo, a typical manta-season day starts with breakfast at the guesthouse and a wait for word that Hanifaru is active. When it is, you board a small boat with a licensed guide, snorkel for a guided session, and are back for lunch. Afternoons are for the bikini beach, a sandbank trip or a walk through the village.

At a resort, the same Hanifaru trip is booked through the dive or excursion centre, and the boat ride can be longer. The rest of the day is spent at your villa, the house reef, the spa or restaurants, with no dress rules beyond the resort's own.

What to check before you choose

Ask a few practical questions before deciding, because they matter more than the label of local island or resort.

  • How close is the property to Hanifaru, and how does it learn the bay is active?
  • What is the transfer price per adult and per child, return?
  • For guesthouses, is the bikini beach close by, and how are meals arranged?
  • For resorts, which outlets are halal, and is there a kids' club?
  • What happens to excursions on rough-weather days?

Families with toddlers often find a resort lagoon easier, while older children who swim well enjoy guesthouse boat trips.

Who each choice suits, and when to look elsewhere

A local island suits travellers who want Hanifaru on a budget, enjoy local life and are comfortable without alcohol. A resort suits couples and families who want space, privacy and facilities.

If you travel outside June to November, the Hanifaru advantage fades. A local island near Male may then be simpler and cheaper, or compare Fulhadhoo versus Dharavandhoo within Baa. Prices and rules change, so confirm everything when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Can I split my Baa trip between a guesthouse and a resort?
Yes, and it can work well. Spend three nights on Dharavandhoo for Hanifaru, then move to a resort for the last nights. Ask the resort for a boat transfer from Dharavandhoo rather than paying for a full transfer from Male. Remember that Green Tax and taxes change with each property, so count both stays separately.
Is the Dharavandhoo bikini beach private?
No. It is a designated beach on an inhabited island where tourists may wear swimwear, but local life carries on nearby. Elsewhere on the island, cover shoulders and knees. Guesthouses describe snorkelling from the bikini beach, but conditions vary with the season.
Do resorts also run Hanifaru trips?
Yes. Resorts in Baa arrange licensed guides and boats for Hanifaru, and some alert guests when the bay is active. Resorts farther from the bay need a longer boat ride, so ask how quickly they can get guests there when mantas arrive.
Is food on Dharavandhoo halal?
Pork and alcohol are not served or allowed on inhabited islands, and guesthouse meals are typically Maldivian and international dishes. If you need a formal halal assurance, ask the guesthouse directly. At resorts, ask which outlets are halal in writing.
