Lhaviyani Atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You are weighing a Lhaviyani resort and want to know how the atoll works from KLIA before you commit.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

Lhaviyani (Faadhippolhu) is a resort-led atoll north of Male. Since February 2022 Madivaru Airport has offered flights of about 25 minutes from Velana, with resorts 10 to 25 minutes on by speedboat, and seaplanes take about 40 minutes. It suits families, couples and divers who want a large or mid-size resort, while local-island stays exist but are thinly documented.

Where is Lhaviyani, and what is it like?

Lhaviyani sits in the north of the Maldives, east of Noonu and Raa and facing the open ocean. Its official name is Faadhippolhu, and the government atoll portal notes that Maafilaafushi island was resettled in the 1980s to ease crowding elsewhere.

For holidaymakers it is a resort atoll. A handful of large and mid-size resorts sit on their own islands, while inhabited islands such as Naifaru see few independent tourists. For how Lhaviyani compares with other regions, see our atolls and regions hub.

The resorts you will see in quotations

Lhaviyani's resorts range from big, busy islands to small hideaways. These are the names Malaysian travellers most often see in packages.

Kuredu splits into three zones: a main area open to all ages, O Resort for ages 12 and up, and Sangu Resort for ages 15 and up. That lets one island work for families and couples at once. More in the Kuredu profile.

Diving and snorkelling

Lhaviyani is a strong diving atoll. Kuredu's Prodivers describes itself as one of the longest-running dive centres in the Maldives, with more than 60 dive sites.

The resort also says turtles live on its house reef about 20 metres from the beach, and that manta rays visit regularly. If diving is the point of your trip, ask each resort for its dive centre, house reef access and boat dive schedule before you choose.

How do you get there from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take either a seaplane or a short domestic flight and speedboat.

  • Seaplane: about 40 minutes with Trans Maldivian. Kuredu lists operating hours of about 06:00 to 16:00.
  • Madivaru flight: about 25 minutes, then 10 to 25 minutes by speedboat, per the 2022 opening announcement.
  • Speedboat from Male: about 2.5 hours, used mostly for Naifaru guesthouses.

AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals connect easily the same day. Batik Air (about 21:55) depends on a late Madivaru flight. Full details are in getting to Lhaviyani from Male airport.

Local islands in Lhaviyani

Naifaru is the main inhabited island and has a few guesthouses. Listings describe the long speedboat from Male, or a flight to Madivaru followed by a boat of about 3 minutes.

Evidence on Naifaru's bikini beach, activities and services is thin, so we treat it with care. If a local-island trip is your priority, the Male atolls or North Ari give far more choice. Our Lhaviyani local island versus resort comparison explains the trade-off.

How long to stay

Three nights is the practical minimum once you count the transfer on each end. Four or five nights suits divers and families, who get more from the house reef and dive boats.

If you split your trip with a cheaper stay near Male, put Lhaviyani at the end. That way a delayed transfer on arrival costs you a night near the airport rather than a resort night.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Halal food: ask resorts in writing which outlets and dishes are halal.
  • Prayer: ask whether a prayer mat and Qibla direction can be provided in your villa.
  • Taxes: Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night at resorts, plus 17% Tourism GST and usually a 10% service charge on the room rate.
  • Luggage: Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage; heavy dive kit may cost extra.
  • Time: the Maldives is 3 hours behind Malaysia.

Who Lhaviyani suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Lhaviyani suits families who want one resort with all-ages and adults-only zones, divers who want a big dive centre, and couples happy with a 25 to 40 minute hop from Male. Its night-capable airport makes it more flexible than many seaplane-only atolls.

Choose differently if you want a budget local-island holiday, or a resort you can reach by speedboat in under an hour; see the Kaafu atoll guide. Transfer prices and schedules change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Lhaviyani far from Male?
It is further than the Male atolls but close by air. Madivaru flights take about 25 minutes and seaplanes about 40 minutes. By sea alone, guesthouse listings put the speedboat to Naifaru at about 2.5 hours, so most holidaymakers fly. Allow about two hours door to door after landing in Male, including waiting time.
Can I reach Lhaviyani on a Batik Air evening arrival?
Possibly. Seaplanes stop at sunset, but the 2022 airport announcement said Madivaru flights operate at night too. Ask your resort whether a late flight and boat run on your date. If not, plan a night in Hulhumale and transfer in the morning.
Are there halal options at Lhaviyani resorts?
We did not find a halal statement on the resort pages we checked. Pork and alcohol are served at resorts. Ask the resort in writing which kitchens and dishes are halal, or whether a halal meal plan can be arranged before you pay.
Is Lhaviyani good in the wet season?
You can visit year-round. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more rain and choppier seas, which matters for seaplanes and snorkel trips. Many divers still travel then, and Kuredu notes regular manta visits. December to April is usually drier and calmer.
