Getting to Baa from Male airport: options and limitations

You are heading to a Baa resort or a Dharavandhoo guesthouse and want the transfer that fits your arrival and budget.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

The quickest way to Baa is a domestic flight of about 20 minutes to Dharavandhoo, with several flights a day. Resorts such as Soneva Fushi and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru are also 30 to 35 minutes by seaplane, if you land in Male by about 15:30. A direct speedboat takes about 2.5 hours and is not recommended by resorts.

The short answer: fly to Dharavandhoo

For most travellers, the domestic flight to Dharavandhoo is the simplest way into Baa. Visit Maldives lists several daily flights of about twenty minutes, and the airport is on a local island close to Hanifaru Bay.

Which route works with your Malaysian flight?

  • AirAsia, about 09:50: Any route works, with time to spare for a Hanifaru trip the next morning.
  • Malaysia Airlines, about 11:25: Any route works.
  • Batik Air, about 21:55: No seaplane. Soneva lists Male to Dharavandhoo flights between 08:00 and 23:00, so a late flight may exist, but it is tight after immigration. Many travellers plan a night near the airport.

Going home, Soneva says departure seaplanes suit international flights from about 09:00 to 16:30, while Dharavandhoo to Male flights run from about 06:00 to 19:30. The domestic flight gives more flexibility for early flights home.

What a Baa transfer costs, worked in ringgit

Soneva Fushi publishes 2026 rates per person, return, checked 12 Oct 2026. They show the gap between the two modes.

Soneva Fushi, 2026AdultChildAdult in RM (x4.09)
Shared seaplaneUSD 1,300USD 650About RM5,317
Domestic flight plus 10 min speedboatUSD 600USD 300About RM2,454

For a family of two adults and two children, the domestic route costs USD 1,800 return (2 x 600 + 2 x 300), about RM7,362, against USD 3,900 by seaplane, about RM15,951. Other resorts and guesthouses price differently; guesthouse transfers are usually far cheaper, but get the quote in writing.

Getting to a Dharavandhoo or Maalhos guesthouse

Guesthouse guests fly to Dharavandhoo and are met at the airport. Kupi notes that the airport sits on the island, with speedboats arranged from there to neighbouring islands.

Maalhos guesthouses describe a speedboat of about 10 to 15 minutes from Dharavandhoo, or a cheaper public ferry that runs on limited days. Confirm the boat price and whether it is shared. For island-level detail, see how to get to Dharavandhoo.

Manta season: book transfers early

Between July and October, flights and seaplanes fill with manta seekers. Book the domestic flight as soon as your room is confirmed, and give your flight details at least 72 hours ahead, as Soneva requires.

The southwest monsoon also brings choppy days. Allow a spare day before your flight home in case a boat or seaplane is delayed by weather.

Seaplane or domestic flight: which to choose

Choose the seaplane if you land in the morning, are staying at a resort and want the aerial view of the reefs. It lands at or near the resort, so there is no change of vehicle.

Choose the domestic flight if you are watching costs, landing later, carrying more luggage or staying on a local island. At Soneva Fushi the flight plus a short boat takes about the same total time as the seaplane, at less than half the price per adult.

Heading on from Baa to another atoll

Some travellers combine Baa with a second stay. Soneva lists a seaplane of about 20 minutes between Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani in Noonu, at USD 300 per adult per way, checked 12 Oct 2026.

For most other combinations, you return to Male and fly out again, which adds a transfer and a day. Read the Noonu atoll guide if you are considering a split stay.

Checklist before you book

  • Domestic flight or seaplane, and which is included?
  • Price per adult and per child, return, with taxes?
  • Luggage limit, especially for dive gear?
  • Seaplane cut-off on arrival and departure?
  • Who books the domestic flight, and who meets you at Dharavandhoo?

Read more on domestic flight plus speedboat transfers. Schedules and rates change, so confirm them with your resort or guesthouse.

Questions travellers ask

Is the airport on the same island as the guesthouses?
Yes, on Dharavandhoo. The airport sits on the island itself, so guesthouse guests usually reach their rooms within minutes of landing. Resort guests and those staying on Maalhos continue by speedboat, which guesthouse pages put at about 10 to 15 minutes to Maalhos.
Can I take a public ferry to Baa?
Ferries link Male and Baa, but we could not confirm a current timetable or fare from an official source. A Maalhos guesthouse describes ferries between Dharavandhoo and Maalhos on limited days. For a short holiday, the domestic flight is usually the practical choice.
What luggage can I take on the Dharavandhoo flight?
Soneva lists domestic flights at 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand, with a maximum of 32 kg per bag, and says its seaplane allows 25 kg per person in total. Excess bags may follow on a later flight. Divers with heavy kit should ask about excess charges in advance.
Do I need to book the flight myself?
Usually not. Resorts and guesthouses typically book the domestic flight and the boat as one transfer, and Soneva asks for bookings at least 72 hours before arrival. If you book a guesthouse independently, ask it to arrange or confirm the flight time and the airport meeting.
