Baa Atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You want mantas, reefs and a protected atoll, and need to know how Baa fits your dates and budget from Malaysia.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

Baa is the Maldives' UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, famous for manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay from about June to November. Visit Maldives lists several daily flights of about 20 minutes to Dharavandhoo, and resorts such as Soneva Fushi and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru are 30 to 35 minutes by seaplane. It suits snorkellers, divers and nature-minded families, and has a real local-island option on Dharavandhoo.

Where is Baa, and why is it special?

Baa sits north of Male, just south of Raa. Its official name is Maalhosmadulu Dhekunuburi (South Maalhosmadulu), and the government atoll portal notes that it takes in three separate natural atolls.

The whole atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Visit Maldives describes nine core areas where all extraction is banned and anchoring is prohibited except in emergencies, with buffer and transition zones around them. For how Baa fits among the other regions, see our atolls and regions hub.

Hanifaru Bay and the manta season

Hanifaru is a small bay on Baa's eastern side where plankton draws feeding mantas, and sometimes whale sharks. Visit Maldives says up to a hundred mantas have been seen in a single gathering.

The rules shape how you visit:

  • Season: about June to November, peaking late June to October.
  • Snorkel only: scuba diving is banned inside the bay.
  • Licensed guide: every group must go with a licensed Hanifaru guide, usually arranged by your resort or guesthouse.
  • No touching, no flash photography.

Boat and visitor caps and the entry fee vary between sources, so ask your operator for current rules. Details are in manta watching at Hanifaru Bay and when to visit Hanifaru Bay.

How do you get to Baa from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then fly or take a seaplane. Baa has its own domestic airport at Dharavandhoo, a short boat ride from Hanifaru.

Morning arrivals on AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines can reach Baa the same day by either route. Batik Air lands about 21:55, too late for seaplanes; Soneva lists Male to Dharavandhoo flights until 23:00, but plan a night near Male if seats are not confirmed. More on getting to Baa from Male airport.

Where to stay in Baa

Baa offers a genuine choice between resorts and local islands, which is rarer in the northern atolls.

  • Resorts: Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Anantara Kihavah are among Baa's best-known names. See the Soneva Fushi profile.
  • Dharavandhoo: the local island with the airport and the closest guesthouse base for Hanifaru, with several small guesthouses and a designated bikini beach described by guesthouses. See the Dharavandhoo guide.
  • Maalhos: a nearby local island, about 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat from Dharavandhoo, with guesthouses and a reef noted for snorkelling.

Our Baa local island versus resort comparison weighs the two in detail.

How long to stay in Baa

Four nights is a sensible minimum in the manta season. Hanifaru depends on plankton and tides, so more days give you more chances to catch an active bay. Outside the season, three or four nights at a resort or guesthouse is enough for reefs and rest.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Halal food: local-island guesthouses serve Maldivian food without pork or alcohol; at resorts, ask in writing which outlets are halal.
  • Dress on local islands: cover shoulders and knees; swimwear only on the bikini beach.
  • Weather: the manta season falls in the wetter southwest monsoon, so expect some rain and choppy days.
  • Taxes: Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night at resorts and USD 6 at registered guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer.
  • Book early for peak manta months: guides and boats are in demand from July to October.

Who Baa suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Baa suits snorkellers and divers chasing mantas between June and November, honeymooners at a nature-focused resort, and budget travellers willing to base themselves on Dharavandhoo. Families with confident swimmers do well here too.

Choose differently if you travel December to April mainly for big animals, when South Ari's year-round whale sharks are a better bet; see South Ari versus Baa diving. For neighbouring atolls, read the Raa atoll guide. Season dates and transfer prices change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Are mantas guaranteed at Hanifaru Bay?
No. Gatherings depend on plankton, tides and the moon, and even in peak months some days are quiet. Visit Maldives describes gatherings of up to a hundred mantas, but that is a best case. Stay at least four nights in season and choose a base that can reach the bay quickly when it is active.
Can children snorkel at Hanifaru?
Confident swimmers can join guided snorkel trips, but the water is open and sometimes choppy, with many other snorkellers in peak season. Ask the operator about minimum ages and life jackets. Younger children may enjoy calmer house reefs at a resort or a guesthouse island more.
Is Baa worth visiting outside the manta season?
Yes, if you want reefs and a quieter resort or guesthouse stay. Visit Maldives notes about 1,200 reef-associated species, turtles and seabirds across the reserve. You lose the Hanifaru highlight, so for a mostly wildlife-driven trip from December to April, South Ari's year-round whale sharks may suit better.
How much is the Soneva Fushi domestic flight transfer?
Soneva lists USD 600 per adult and USD 300 per child return for the wheeled flight to Dharavandhoo, including a speedboat of about 10 minutes, checked 12 Oct 2026. The shared seaplane is USD 1,300 per adult return in 2026. Other Baa resorts set their own prices.
