Dharavandhoo guesthouses: how to choose a base for Hanifaru

Most Dharavandhoo guesthouses are small, family-run and close to everything, so the differences come down to how they handle manta trips and what is included. Price matters less than you might expect.

What is the guesthouse scene like?

About 21 guesthouses were listed on Dharavandhoo in April 2026. Most have 5 to 7 rooms, so you get personal service but limited facilities.

Expect air-conditioned doubles or twins with private bathrooms, breakfast in many rates, and Wi-Fi of varying speed. Pools, gyms and spas are rare.

How to choose: five questions that matter

1. How do you run Hanifaru trips? Ask whether the guesthouse uses its own boat and licensed guide or a partner, how many guests per boat, and whether the visitor fee is included.
2. How far is the bikini beach? It runs along the north side. The island is small, but a short walk matters with children.
3. What is the meal plan? Breakfast only means eating out for lunch and dinner. Half or full board simplifies cash.
4. Is the airport pickup included? The airport is on the island, but bags and timing still matter.
5. What is the total with taxes? Ask for room, 10% service, 17% TGST and USD 6 Green Tax per person per night as one figure.

What does a room really cost?

A listed "from" rate is rarely what you pay. Work out the total before you compare properties.

Take a USD 100 room as an example. Add 10% service and 17% Tourism GST, which together come to about 28.7%, and the room becomes about USD 129 a night. Add Green Tax of USD 6 each for two guests and the nightly total is about USD 141, or about RM 575 at RM 4.09.

Where on the island to stay

Dharavandhoo is small, so location differences are minor. Most guesthouses sit within a short walk of the village, the jetty and the airport.

If beach time matters, look for a property on or near the northern side, where the bikini beach runs. If you are diving every day, being close to your dive centre's jetty saves early-morning walking with gear.

Light sleepers can ask about distance from the mosque and the airport, since flights and prayer calls carry on a small island.

When to book

Book early for July to October, the peak manta months. With only around 21 small properties, the best rooms fill early and domestic flights get busier too.

Outside the manta season, availability is easier. Ask whether manta trips still run before you commit.
