Faafu is a small, quiet atoll south-west of Male. It has one resort, a handful of village islands and no airport, which keeps visitor numbers low.
For how Faafu sits among the other regions, start with our atolls and regions hub. This page covers what the atoll offers and who it suits.
Where is Faafu, and what is it called?
Faafu is the northern half of Nilandhe Atoll, south-west of Male and north of Dhaalu. The government atoll portal names it Nilandhe Atholhu Uthuruburi and says it matches the natural atoll of the same name.
You will see it written as Faafu, F. Atoll or North Nilandhe. Its southern neighbour, Dhaalu, is covered in our Dhaalu atoll guide.
What can you actually stay at in Faafu?
Faafu has one resort and a small number of guesthouses on its inhabited islands.
| Island | Type | What we could confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Filitheyo | Resort | 125 thatched villas, spa, infinity pool, Werner Lau dive centre, house reef with reef sharks and rays (Trans Maldivian, checked 12 Oct 2026) |
| Nilandhoo | Local island | Atoll capital per travel guides, several small guesthouses |
| Magoodhoo | Local island | Guesthouses listed, including Island Life Maldives Retreat and Palm Rest |
| Feeali | Local island | At least one guesthouse listed |
| Dharanboodhoo, Bilehdhoo | Local islands | Few or no tourist listings found |
Guesthouse details come from travel guides and booking listings, not official registers. Check that a property is still operating and registered before you pay.
Note that the official Filitheyo domain we tried now redirects to a domain sale page. The resort still appears with Trans Maldivian and tour operators, so confirm your booking through an established operator and ask for the resort's current direct contact.
How do you get to Faafu from KLIA?
Fly KLIA to Male, then take a seaplane to the resort or a public speedboat to a local island.
- Seaplane: Trans Maldivian lists about 35 minutes to Filitheyo, then a 15-minute dhoni. It says seaplanes are the only transfer for resort guests.
- Speedboat: travel guides give about 2.5 to 3 hours from Male to the local islands.
- Ferry: slow and infrequent, best treated as a last resort.
Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so land at Male by about 15:30. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals work; Batik Air (about 21:55) needs a night near Male. Full detail is in getting to Faafu from Male airport.
Diving, reefs and what to do
Faafu's appeal is reefs and quiet water rather than big-ticket wildlife. Filitheyo runs a Werner Lau dive centre, and Trans Maldivian notes reef sharks and rays on the house reef.
Travel guides name drift dives such as Two Brothers and Magoodhoo Corner. Guesthouses typically offer snorkel trips, sandbank picnics, fishing and dolphin trips, priced per person.
We found no official marine protected area for Faafu, so none is listed on this page.
When is the best time to visit Faafu?
The drier northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, gives the calmest seas for the long speedboat ride and the best visibility for divers. That window also overlaps Malaysian year-end school holidays and Chinese New Year, when resort rates are usually highest.
The wetter southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings more wind and swell. Seaplanes can be delayed by weather, and a 2.5-hour open-water speedboat is less comfortable for anyone prone to seasickness.
| Travel window | Sea conditions | Fit for Malaysians |
|---|---|---|
| December to April | Usually calmer, clearer water | Year-end holidays, CNY, honeymoons |
| May to November | More wind, swell and rain showers | Mid-year breaks, lower demand |
If you travel in the wetter months, choose the seaplane over the speedboat where possible, and allow a spare night near Male on the way home.
How long to stay in Faafu
Plan at least four nights on a local island, because the speedboat takes most of a morning each way. Three or four nights works at Filitheyo, since the seaplane is short.
If you want both resort and village life, combine two nights near Male with three or four in Faafu.
Practical notes for Malaysian travellers
- Halal food: guesthouses on local islands serve Maldivian food without pork or alcohol. At the resort, ask in writing which dishes are halal.
- Prayer: local islands have mosques; ask your guesthouse about Friday prayer times.
- Dress: on Nilandhoo, Magoodhoo and Feeali, cover shoulders and knees, and swim only at a designated bikini beach.
- Green Tax: USD 12 per guest per night at the resort, USD 6 at registered guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer. Under 2s are exempt.
- Cash: carry small US dollar notes for tips and boats.

Who Faafu suits, and when to choose elsewhere
Faafu suits couples and divers who want one resort and few crowds, and travellers who enjoy a slow, genuine village stay. Older travellers who prefer short transfers do well at Filitheyo thanks to the 35-minute seaplane.
It suits less well if you want a choice of resorts, a lively guesthouse island or a short boat from Male. In that case, look at Dhaalu, which has several resorts and an airport, or compare a local island versus resort stay in Faafu. Transfer times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.
