Getting to Dhaalu from Male airport: options and limitations

Dhaalu is one of the more forgiving atolls to reach from Male, because it has its own domestic airport. The main question is which route your resort uses and how late you can land.

Which routes go to Dhaalu?

There are two main routes: a domestic flight plus speedboat, and a seaplane.

Sources give slightly different times for the same leg. Use the figure in your resort's confirmation, not a general guide.

How does each route fit your KLIA flight?

Your Malaysian flight decides which route works on arrival day.

Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset, so land by about 15:30. Dhaalu Airport takes wheeled aircraft, and travel guides say domestic flights can run after dark. Get written confirmation before you rely on a late connection, or plan a night in Hulhumale.

What does the transfer cost?

Treat these as planning ranges, not quotes. One travel guide gives about USD 400 to 600 per person return for a Dhaalu seaplane (amaldives.com, checked 12 Oct 2026). Domestic flight plus speedboat is usually somewhat cheaper.

At RM4.09 per USD, USD 400 to 600 is about RM1,636 to RM2,454 per person return. Resorts set their own transfer price and usually add it to your package, so ask whether GST is included.

Luggage and timing limits

Trans Maldivian seaplanes allow 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage. Domestic flight allowances depend on the airline and fare, so ask your resort.

Send your flight details at least 72 hours ahead. On the way home, a morning transfer from Dhaalu suits afternoon AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines departures.

Waits at Male of up to about three hours are normal, because resorts group guests from several flights.

What to ask before you book the transfer

• Is the transfer a domestic flight plus speedboat, a seaplane, or your choice?
• What is the price per adult and per child return, and does it include GST?
• What is the latest international arrival the resort can connect the same day?
• What baggage allowance applies on the domestic flight?
• If the transfer misses, does the resort arrange and pay for a Hulhumale night?

Get the answers in writing before you pay a deposit.

Getting home: the return transfer

The return leg follows the same route in reverse, and the timing rules still apply. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, and domestic flights are grouped around international departures.

A morning transfer from Dhaalu usually reaches Male in time for afternoon AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines departures to KLIA. For the Batik Air late evening departure, you will usually have several spare hours at Male, which some travellers spend in Hulhumale.

Ask the resort for your return transfer time a day before you leave, and keep your passport and boarding details in your hand luggage.

Getting to Kudahuvadhoo and guesthouse islands

For guesthouse stays, fly to Dhaalu Airport, which is on Kudahuvadhoo itself. Other guesthouse islands need a short boat, usually arranged by the guesthouse.

Who each route suits

The domestic flight suits most travellers, especially families and anyone landing in the afternoon. The seaplane suits honeymooners who want the aerial views and land early.

If your flight lands late and your resort cannot confirm an evening flight, a night in Hulhumale is the calm option. For a quieter atoll reached only by seaplane, compare getting to Faafu. Times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.
