What to do on Dharavandhoo: Hanifaru mantas, diving and the bikini beach

You are planning days on Dharavandhoo and want to know what you can actually do there, in the water and out of it.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

The main reason to stay on Dharavandhoo is Hanifaru Bay, about five minutes by boat, where mantas feed roughly May to November. It is snorkel only, with a licensed guide and a per-person visitor fee. Divers can visit manta cleaning stations such as Dharavandhoo Thila with several island dive centres, and the bikini beach on the north side covers lazy afternoons. Sandbank, fishing and resort day trips fill the gaps.

On Dharavandhoo, most days revolve around the water. Hanifaru Bay is the headline, but the island also works as a dive base and has a long bikini beach for rest days.

This page covers what you can do and the rules that apply. For the island overview, read the Dharavandhoo island guide, or browse the island directory.

Hanifaru Bay: how a manta trip works

Hanifaru is a small protected bay where currents trap plankton during the southwest monsoon, drawing feeding mantas and sometimes whale sharks. From Dharavandhoo the boat ride is about five minutes.

The rules are strict and enforced:

  • Snorkel only. Scuba diving inside the bay is banned.
  • Every group must go with a licensed Hanifaru guide.
  • No touching marine life and no flash photography.
  • Boat and visitor numbers in the bay at one time are limited, and time in the water is capped per group.
  • A per-person visitor fee applies; confirm the current amount with your operator.

Boat trips were reported at about USD 30 to 50 per person shared in 2026, plus the fee unless the operator includes it. Read Hanifaru visitor etiquette and rules before you go.

When are the mantas there?

Roughly May to November, with peak gatherings around July to October. Numbers vary daily with tide, current and moon phase.

Outside that window, Hanifaru is quiet and the trip is not worth the cost. Plan the island around the season, or choose a different base.

Diving from Dharavandhoo

Several dive centres operate on the island. An April 2026 guide lists Manta Tribe Maldives, Dharavandhoo Divers, Liquid Salt Divers and Dharavandhoo Diving Centre.

Nearby sites include Dharavandhoo Thila and Dharavandhoo Corner, known as manta cleaning stations, plus other Baa reefs. Since diving is banned in Hanifaru itself, cleaning stations are where divers see mantas.

Dive optionReported 2026 price
Discovery dive (no licence)About USD 80 to 120
Two-tank boat diveAbout USD 120 to 150
Open Water courseAbout USD 500 to 700

Prices come from one island guide and are planning figures, not quotes. Check the centre's own price list and whether equipment is included. Divers comparing atolls may like Baa versus South Ari for mantas and whale sharks.

The bikini beach and house reef

The bikini beach runs along most of the northern side of the island, according to the April 2026 guide, with sunbeds, hammocks and swings. Swimwear is fine there; cover up in the village.

House-reef and drift snorkelling are possible, but currents can be strong. Ask your guesthouse where to enter and go with a partner.

Other trips and things to do

These fill non-manta days or suit non-swimmers:

  • Sandbank trip: about USD 40 to 60, a half day on a strip of sand.
  • Sunset or big-game fishing: several local operators listed.
  • Turtle snorkel near Soneva Fushi: a short boat trip, arranged locally.
  • Resort day pass: about USD 80 to 200, the only way to have a drink nearby.
  • Village life: cooking classes and cultural events were promoted under Visit Dharavandhoo Year 2025; ask your guesthouse what runs now.

Prices are reported 2026 ranges. Confirm before you pay.

What to pack for the water

Bring a well-fitting mask and snorkel, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest and a dry bag. Operators usually supply fins and life vests, but ask in advance, especially for children.

Who this suits, and who might prefer elsewhere

Snorkellers and divers who time their trip for the season will find more here than almost any other local island. Couples and older travellers who like quiet days also do well.

If you want lots of non-marine activities, nightlife or watersports variety, a busier island such as Maafushi fits better. Families should confirm age rules for Hanifaru and dives before choosing.

Questions travellers ask

What if there are no mantas on the day?
It happens, because feeding depends on currents, tides and plankton. Ask operators whether they monitor the bay before heading out and whether a trip that sees nothing can be repeated at a discount. Planning two or three manta attempts across a 4 or 5 night stay gives you a better chance.
Can children snorkel at Hanifaru?
Confident swimmers often can, but it is open water and can be crowded with boats. Operators set their own minimum ages and swimming requirements, so ask before you book. Life jackets or snorkel vests help younger children, and a parent should stay with them throughout.
Is the house reef good for snorkelling?
The island guide describes house-reef and drift snorkelling around Dharavandhoo, with visibility usually better from December to April. Currents can be strong near channels, so ask your guesthouse where it is safe to enter, and snorkel with a guide or partner rather than alone.
Can I visit a resort for a day?
Yes, several Baa resorts sell day passes, reported at about USD 80 to 200 per person in 2026, sometimes including lunch and a transfer. This is the only way to have a drink near Dharavandhoo. Your guesthouse can usually arrange it; confirm what the pass includes.
