How to get to Dharavandhoo from Male airport

You have picked Dharavandhoo for the mantas and need to know how to get there on the day you land from Kuala Lumpur.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Fly. Maldivian and Manta Air run domestic flights from Velana airport to Dharavandhoo, about 35 to 50 minutes in the air, reported at about USD 85 to 135 per person one way in April 2026. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals usually connect the same day; a Batik Air evening arrival needs a night near the airport. Shared speedboats (2 to 4 hours) and a weekly cargo ferry (about 8 hours) exist but suit flexible travellers only.

  • No alcohol on the island; resort day trips are the only option
  • Peak manta season fills flights and guesthouses, so book early

Getting there from Male airport

  • domestic flight: about 35 to 50 minutes in the airReported at about USD 85 to 135 per person one way booked directly (aMaldives, updated April 2026); confirm with Maldivian or Manta Air
  • shared speedboat: about 2 to 4 hoursReported fares conflict (USD 25 to 70 per person one way); confirm with your guesthouse
  • cargo ferry: about 8 hoursA few US dollars per person reported; not confirmed from an official source

The domestic flight is the practical way to reach Dharavandhoo. Morning flights from Kuala Lumpur leave plenty of time to connect, and you land on the island itself, a short walk or ride from most guesthouses.

This page covers the transfer options, the timings reported in 2026, and which flights from Malaysia connect. For the island itself, see the Dharavandhoo island guide, and for transfers generally, Maldives airport transfers explained.

Figures come from an island guide updated in April 2026 and flight schedule listings, not an official timetable. Confirm with the airline or your guesthouse before you book.

How the domestic flight works

Maldivian and Manta Air both fly from Velana International Airport (MLE) to Dharavandhoo (DRV). Schedule listings show about 35 minutes for Manta Air's scheduled block time, and the island guide gives 40 to 52 minutes.

Domestic flights leave from the domestic terminal next to the international one. Your guesthouse or the airline's desk will check you in; allow time to collect bags and walk across.

On arrival, guesthouses usually meet you at Dharavandhoo airport. The island is small, so the ride is short.

Which flights from Malaysia connect?

Three airlines fly nonstop from KUL to Male in about 4h15 to 4h25. The question is whether you land early enough for a domestic flight.

KUL flightLands in Male (approx.)Same-day Dharavandhoo?
AirAsia09:50Yes, comfortably
Malaysia Airlines11:25Usually yes
Batik Air21:55No, stay a night in Hulhumale

The reported last departure is around 17:50, and arrivals after about 17:00 risk missing it. Leave at least two to three hours between landing and your domestic flight to clear immigration and collect bags.

The return trip

Plan the reverse carefully. Fly back to Male with a good buffer before your international departure, ideally on a morning flight on your last day or the day before.

AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines both leave Male around midday or early afternoon, so an early domestic flight works. If you are anxious about delays, spend your last night in Hulhumale.

Speedboat and cargo ferry

Shared speedboats run between Male and Baa on an arranged basis rather than a fixed public timetable. Reported journey times are 2 to 4 hours and fares conflict across sources, so get a written quote from your guesthouse.

The cargo ferry is reported to leave Male on Wednesdays at about 08:00 and return from Dharavandhoo on Saturdays at about 08:00. At about 8 hours each way, it fits only long, flexible stays.

Both cross open water. In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November and the same months as the manta season, seas can be rough.

Travelling with children or older relatives

The domestic flight is short and calm compared with a long speedboat, which makes it the easier choice for families and older travellers. Children usually pay a fare too; check the airline's child fare and baggage rules when you book.

Checklist before you book

  • Book the domestic flight before you pay for a non-refundable room.
  • Give your guesthouse both flight numbers.
  • Check the domestic baggage allowance, especially with dive gear.
  • In peak manta months (about July to October), book flights early.
  • Keep a Hulhumale hotel option ready if you land on Batik Air or your flight is delayed.

Who this transfer suits

The flight suits honeymooners, families and older travellers who want a short, calm transfer. Budget travellers may compare it with the speedboat, but for stays under five nights the time saved is usually worth it.

If a single transfer cost matters most, a Kaafu island reached by a short speedboat may suit you better. Compare options in domestic flight plus speedboat transfers explained, and see the full cost of a Dharavandhoo holiday.

Questions travellers ask

Should I book the domestic flight myself or through the guesthouse?
Either works. Guesthouses often book flights and the short airport pickup as a package, which helps when flights are rescheduled because they can adjust your pickup. Booking directly with the airline can be cheaper. Whichever you choose, give the guesthouse your international flight number so it can plan around delays.
How much luggage can I take on the domestic flight?
Allowances depend on the airline and fare, and they are usually lower than international economy. Check the allowance printed on your domestic ticket and pay for extra weight in advance if you carry dive gear or large cameras. Divers often rent equipment on the island to avoid excess charges.
What happens if my KUL flight is delayed and I miss the last flight?
You will need a night near the airport in Hulhumale and the first flight the next morning. Ask the guesthouse or airline in advance what it does in this case and whether the first night of your room is charged. Travel insurance with delay cover helps with the extra hotel night.
Is the speedboat cheaper than flying?
Sometimes, but reported shared speedboat fares conflict, from about USD 25 to 70 per person one way, and the trip takes 2 to 4 hours in open water. For a short stay the flight usually gives you more time on the island. Ask your guesthouse for the current shared boat days and fare.
