Dhiffushi guesthouses: how to choose the right stay

On Dhiffushi, the right guesthouse is mostly about three things: how close it is to a tourist beach, what the price really includes, and whether the room fits your group. Most properties are small and family run, so the differences are in the details.

What is the guesthouse scene on Dhiffushi like?

Dhiffushi has a mid-sized scene. Hotelier Maldives counted 25 guesthouses and hotels in 2022, and aMaldives lists 29 today.

Most have fewer than ten rooms, with air conditioning, a private bathroom, WiFi and breakfast. A few larger hotels add a pool or rooftop.

There are no resorts on the island itself. Alcohol is not served, and evenings are quiet.

Low season on these listings is about May to October or November; high season is about December to April. Confirm the rate and what it includes directly before you pay.

A shortlisting checklist

Use this list when you compare two or three properties.

• Beach distance: ask for walking minutes to the nearest tourist beach, not just "near the beach".
• Total price: ask whether 10% service charge, 17% Tourism GST and USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night are included.
• Breakfast: included, and where it is served. One listing notes breakfast at a sister property.
• Room layout: twin beds, triple or a true family room for children.
• Transfer help: whether staff meet you at the airport and book the speedboat.
• Payment: card, cash or bank transfer, and any card fee.
• Registration: the property should be registered with the Ministry of Tourism.

Which kind of stay suits which traveller?

Honeymooners usually like a small beachfront property with a sea-facing room. Veli Vilaa's four rooms on the beach is the type to look for.

Families do better with a property that has family rooms and some space, and a pool can help on windy days. Stone Hotels Dhiffushi is an example of the larger, pool-equipped style.

Budget travellers and friends can save with a standard double in a village guesthouse a few minutes' walk from the beach. Island Serenity's listed low-season rate starts at about USD 60.

Questions to ask before you pay

Send these questions by email or WhatsApp and keep the replies. Good guesthouses answer them quickly and clearly.

• What is the total for my dates, including all taxes and Green Tax?
• Which tourist beach is closest, and how many minutes on foot?
• Can you meet us at the airport and book the speedboat, and what does it cost?
• Is the room on the ground floor? This matters for older travellers and strollers.
• What is the cancellation policy if the boat or flight is cancelled by weather?

Clear answers to these five save most of the problems travellers report after arrival.

Price, tax and what "from" means

A "from USD 60" rate is the cheapest room in the cheapest month. Add 10% service and 17% GST and that room is about USD 77 a night, plus USD 12 Green Tax for two people.

When a different base works better

If you want resort service, a pool villa or alcohol, a guesthouse is the wrong tool, and a North Male Atoll resort will suit you better. Many couples split the trip, with three nights on Dhiffushi and one at a resort.
