How to get to Dhiffushi from Male airport

You have a flight from KUL booked and need to know how and when you will reach Dhiffushi the same day.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Most travellers take a shared speedboat from Velana airport, about 40 to 50 minutes, reported at roughly USD 25 to 50 per person each way and usually two or three times a day. The public ferry leaves Male at about 14:30, costs MVR 22 and takes 2 to 3 hours, but does not run on Fridays. On a morning AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines arrival you reach the island the same day; on the evening Batik Air arrival, plan a night in Hulhumale unless a late boat is confirmed.

Getting there from Male airport

  • shared speedboat: about 40 to 50 minutesReported at about USD 25 to 50 per person one way (aMaldives, 2026) and around USD 50 or more (A Social Nomad, Jan 2026). Confirm with your guesthouse
  • public ferry: about 2 to 3 hoursMVR 22 per person, cash (A Social Nomad, Jan 2026)

The quick answer: take a shared speedboat from the airport jetty and you are on Dhiffushi in under an hour. The public ferry is far cheaper but slow, leaves from Male city and does not run on Fridays.

This page sits under the Kaafu Atoll transfer guide. For what the island itself is like, read the Dhiffushi island guide.

Which transfer options reach Dhiffushi?

There are three practical ways in. The table uses figures reported in 2026 travel guides, since no operator publishes an official timetable we could verify.

Prices come from A Social Nomad (January 2026) and aMaldives. Confirm the current fare with your guesthouse when you book.

Shared speedboat: times and booking

A Social Nomad reports Male departures at 11:30 and 16:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Thursdays and Fridays run to different times, including late-evening boats around 20:00 to 21:00 and a Friday morning run.

aMaldives lists a 16:30 daily departure from Male's Jetty 6, with extra Friday boats. The two sources do not match exactly, which is normal: schedules shift with season and demand.

Ask your guesthouse to confirm the boat for your exact date. Most will meet you in the arrivals hall and walk you to the jetty.

Public ferry: cheap but slow

Route 308 leaves Male at about 14:30 and reaches Dhiffushi about two to three hours later. The return leaves Dhiffushi at about 06:30. There is no service on Fridays.

The fare is MVR 22 per person, paid in cash. From the airport you first take the airport ferry to Male city (about MVR 15, every 15 minutes in the daytime), then walk or take a taxi to the terminal.

Sources disagree on which Male terminal the 308 uses, so confirm with your guesthouse. Our page on planning around public ferry schedules explains the wider system.

Which option fits your KUL flight?

Flights from KUL land at three different times, and that decides the plan.

Flight from KULLands MLE aboutWorkable Dhiffushi plan
AirAsia09:5011:30 speedboat if the day has one, or 16:30; public ferry possible except Friday
Malaysia Airlines11:2516:30 speedboat; public ferry at 14:30 is tight but possible
Batik Air21:55Night in Hulhumale, or a confirmed late boat or private transfer

Allow at least an hour from landing to the jetty for immigration and bags. If the margin is thin, read whether to stay in Male or Hulhumale first.

Getting back for your flight home

The public ferry leaves Dhiffushi at about 06:30 and reached Male around 08:40 on one reported trip, about 30 minutes late. That can work for an afternoon flight, but not on a Friday.

Shared speedboats back to Male usually include an early morning run. Book it with your guesthouse on arrival so you know the time.

If your flight leaves before about 11:00, a last night in Hulhumale removes the risk of a late or cancelled boat.

Speedboat or ferry: a decision rule

Take the speedboat if you have children, older parents, heavy bags, a Friday arrival or only 3 nights. The time saved is worth the fare.

Take the public ferry if you are a flexible adult, travelling light, not on a Friday, and happy to spend most of an afternoon getting there. Our guide to choosing between speedboat and public ferry covers the trade-offs in more detail.

What to check before you pay

Use this short checklist when your guesthouse or a booking site confirms the transfer.

  • The exact departure time for your date, and whether Thursday or Friday runs differ.
  • Where you meet the crew: airport arrivals hall or a Male city jetty.
  • Whether the price is per person or per boat, one way or return, and cash or card.
  • Luggage limits, especially for surfboards, dive bags or strollers.
  • What happens if your flight is delayed past the last boat.

Put the price into the trip cost calculator with the rest of your stay so the transfer is not a surprise later.

Who this transfer suits

Dhiffushi is one of the easier islands for older travellers and young families because the speedboat is under an hour. Honeymooners on a morning flight can be on the beach by mid-afternoon.

If you want an even shorter ride, Thulusdhoo is about 30 minutes away; see how to get to Thulusdhoo.

Questions travellers ask

Can I book the Dhiffushi speedboat myself?
Yes. Guesthouses usually arrange it and meet you at the airport, and the boats are also sold on booking platforms such as 12Go with card payment. Paying on the spot is usually cash in US dollars or rufiyaa. Booking through your guesthouse is simplest, since it will move you if a boat time changes.
How much luggage can I take on the public ferry?
The public ferry carries local passengers and cargo, so normal suitcases are fine, but there is little help with heavy bags and the boarding steps can be awkward. Families with large luggage or a stroller usually find the speedboat easier, since the crew loads bags at the airport jetty.
What if the sea is rough?
Speedboats and ferries can be delayed or cancelled in bad weather, more often in the southwest monsoon from about May to November. Leave slack on the last day, and if your flight home is early, consider spending the final night in Hulhumale.
Is a private speedboat worth it?
For a group of four to six, or for a late-night arrival, it can be. aMaldives reports about USD 230 per boat from the airport. Split six ways that is close to a shared seat, and you leave when you land rather than waiting for a schedule.
