Maafushi versus Thoddoo: which Maldives local island?

You want a local island stay and are torn between the well-known excursion hub and a quieter farming island in North Ari.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Pick Maafushi if you want an easy transfer, many excursions and lots of places to eat, especially on a 3 or 4 night trip. Pick Thoddoo if you want a larger, greener and quieter island with fruit farms and a calmer beach, and can work around fewer speedboats, with return boats to Male reported in the early morning.

The short verdict

Maafushi is the convenient choice. Speedboats run several times a day from the airport, and the island is full of excursion operators, cafes and guesthouses.

Thoddoo is the quieter choice. It is a larger, greener farming island in North Ari with a calmer beach, but fewer boats and fewer places to eat.

The flight-day check

Thoddoo's boat schedule is the deciding factor, so check it against your flights first. Use these three questions.

  1. When do you land? AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25. Both usually connect to a same-day Thoddoo speedboat. Batik Air at about 21:55 does not, so plan a night in Hulhumale.
  2. When do you fly home? If the Thoddoo return boat leaves early in the morning, a midday or afternoon flight works. A morning flight may need a final night near the airport.
  3. Is any travel day a Friday? Boat timetables change on Fridays across the Maldives, so check with your guesthouse.

Maafushi passes all three checks easily, which is why it suits short trips.

Cost for two, worked out

Return speedboat transfers for two adults:

  • Maafushi: USD 25 × 2 × 2 = USD 100, about RM409 at RM4.09.
  • Thoddoo: USD 62 × 2 × 2 = about USD 248, about RM1,014, using the cheapest listed fare.

Rooms on both islands sit in the guesthouse band of roughly USD 60 to 180 per night before tax. Smaller guesthouses on both charge USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night.

The transfer is the main difference, roughly RM600 more for a couple to reach Thoddoo. Model the full trip in the trip cost calculator.

What a stay feels like

Maafushi is lively. Excursions leave throughout the day, and evenings bring visitors out to cafes along the main streets.

Thoddoo moves at village speed. Visitors walk or cycle past farms, swim at the bikini beach and eat at their guesthouse or one of a few local restaurants.

On both islands, cover shoulders and knees away from the bikini beach. Alcohol is not sold on either island.

Excursions and activities compared

Maafushi has the widest excursion menu of any local island near Male. Sandbank picnics, snorkel trips, fishing, resort day passes and water sports are sold by many operators, so prices are competitive and you can book the day before.

Thoddoo has fewer operators, so excursions are usually arranged through your guesthouse. Expect snorkel trips, sandbank visits and sometimes a trip toward Rasdhoo, but less choice on any single day.

If your holiday is built around a daily trip, Maafushi wins. If you are happy with two or three outings and quiet days in between, Thoddoo is enough.

Packing differences

For Thoddoo, bring more US dollars in small notes, any medicines you need and snacks you rely on, since shops are fewer. A reef-safe sunscreen and rash guard help on longer beach days.

For Maafushi, you can buy most basics on the island. Pack modest clothes for walking around both islands, and a light cover-up for the walk to the bikini beach.

Who each island suits

Maafushi suits first-timers, short trips, friend groups and travellers who want a different excursion every day. It also suits anyone landing on the Batik Air evening flight.

Thoddoo suits couples, slow travellers and repeat visitors who want calm and space. It pairs well with Rasdhoo nearby, as explained in moving between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo.

Questions travellers ask

What grows on Thoddoo, and can visitors buy it?
Thoddoo is known as a farming island, growing papaya, passion fruit and watermelon among other crops, according to travel guides. Guesthouses often serve local fruit at breakfast, and some arrange farm walks. Ask your host what is in season, and buy only from farmers or shops that are clearly selling.
Is there an ATM on Thoddoo?
Wikivoyage lists one Bank of Maldives ATM near the harbour and says many businesses prefer US dollars to cards. That information is several years old, so ask your guesthouse whether the ATM is working and whether it takes card payment. Bring enough US dollars in small notes as a backup.
Can I visit Thoddoo as a day trip from Maafushi?
Not practically. The two islands are in different atolls and there is no simple direct boat between them. If you want both, plan them as separate stays and move through Male, or choose Rasdhoo, which is closer to Thoddoo, as your second island.
Is Thoddoo good for snorkelling?
Travel guides describe reef within a short swim of the beach, with the outer reef reachable but subject to strong currents. Snorkel with a guide or a buddy, check conditions with your guesthouse each day, and stay inside the lagoon if you are not a confident swimmer.
