Faafu has no airport of its own, so every trip ends with a seaplane or a boat. Which one you take depends on whether you stay at the resort or on a local island.
If you have not chosen where to stay, start with our Faafu atoll guide. This page covers only how you get there and back.
Which routes go to Faafu?
There are two practical routes: the resort seaplane and the public speedboat to local islands.
| Route | Time | Who it suits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trans Maldivian seaplane to Filitheyo, then dhoni | About 35 min plus 15 min | Resort guests | Trans Maldivian, checked 12 Oct 2026 |
| Public speedboat Male to Nilandhoo or Magoodhoo | About 2.5 to 3 hours | Guesthouse guests | amaldives.com, checked 12 Oct 2026 |
| Government ferry | Many hours, infrequent | Very flexible travellers only | amaldives.com |
Trans Maldivian states that seaplanes are the only transfer for Filitheyo guests. For guesthouses, the boat is usually arranged or recommended by the guesthouse itself.
How does each route fit your KLIA flight?
The Malaysian flight you choose decides whether you reach Faafu on arrival day.
| KLIA flight | Lands at Male | Seaplane same day | Speedboat same day |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirAsia | About 09:50 | Yes | Usually, if a boat runs that day |
| Malaysia Airlines | About 11:25 | Yes | Check the boat departure time |
| Batik Air | About 21:55 | No | No |
Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset only, so land by about 15:30 to transfer the same day. With Batik Air, plan a night in Hulhumale and continue the next morning.
Public speedboats do not always run daily, so ask your guesthouse which days they operate before you book flights.
What does the transfer cost?
Treat these as planning ranges, not quotes. A travel guide gives about USD 500 to 600 per adult return for the seaplane, and about USD 40 to 70 per person each way for the public speedboat (amaldives.com, checked 12 Oct 2026).
At RM4.09 per USD, that is roughly RM2,045 to RM2,454 per adult return for the seaplane, and RM164 to RM286 per person each way by speedboat. Resorts usually add the seaplane to your package, so ask whether taxes are included.

Luggage and timing limits
Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage per person, with excess charged per kilo. Pack soft bags if you can, and leave bulky items in Malaysia.
Seaplanes can be delayed by weather or wait for other guests' flights. Allow a buffer of a few hours on your return before your international departure.
A sample arrival day from KLIA
This is how a typical seaplane day can look on the AirAsia morning flight. Times are Malaysian then Maldives local, which is 3 hours behind.
| Time (Maldives) | Step |
|---|---|
| 05:35 (08:35 MYT) | Depart KLIA |
| About 09:50 | Land at Male, immigration and bags |
| About 10:30 | Meet the transfer desk, wait in the lounge |
| Late morning to early afternoon | Seaplane of about 35 minutes, then 15-minute dhoni |
| Mid afternoon | Check in at Filitheyo |
On the speedboat route, the boat time sets your day. A morning boat can reach Nilandhoo or Magoodhoo by early afternoon; a later boat may mean arriving close to sunset.
What to ask before you book the transfer
- Is the seaplane price per adult return, and are GST and service charge included?
- What is the child price, and the age at which adult fares apply?
- What is the latest international arrival time the resort accepts for a same-day seaplane?
- For guesthouses: which days does the speedboat run, from which jetty, and at what time?
- Who pays for a Hulhumale night if a delay causes a missed transfer?
Get the answers in writing, so your quotation and your actual day match.
Practical tips for the boat route
- Ask the guesthouse to confirm the boat day, departure jetty and per person price in writing.
- Keep motion sickness tablets handy, especially between May and November.
- Pack valuables and medicines in a waterproof daypack.
- Arrive at the jetty early; boats may leave when full.
Who each route suits
The seaplane suits honeymooners, families with young children and older travellers who want a short, scenic transfer. It is the only option for Filitheyo.
The speedboat suits budget travellers and those happy to spend half a day travelling for a quieter, cheaper village stay. If you want a shorter boat, compare the ways to get to Dhaalu, which has its own airport, or read our guide to Maldives transfers. Times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.
