Where is Gaafu Alifu, and what is it like?

Gaafu Alifu covers the northern half of Huvadhu, one of the largest natural atolls in the world, in the far south of the Maldives. The government atoll portal lists it as a separate administrative atoll from Gaafu Dhaalu to the south.

How do you get to Gaafu Alifu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a domestic flight to Kooddoo (GKK), run by Maldivian and Manta Air. The flight takes about 55 to 65 minutes, followed by a short speedboat.

How long to stay

Four nights is the minimum that makes the domestic flight worthwhile. Five to seven nights suits divers and honeymooners better.

On departure day, take a domestic flight that lands in Male at least three hours before your KLIA flight. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines leave Male around midday or later, so a morning domestic flight usually works.

• Halal food: ask in writing which outlets serve halal food; all-inclusive plans make this easier to agree upfront.

Gaafu Alifu suits divers, honeymooners who want privacy, and families who like an all-inclusive resort with a short boat ride after the flight. It suits travellers with Batik Air evening arrivals who are happy to overnight in Male first.
