How do you get from Male to Gaafu Alifu?

Take a domestic flight from Velana to Kooddoo, then the resort's speedboat. There is no scheduled seaplane, and no practical public ferry for a holiday.

A worked arrival day on Malaysia Airlines

Here is a typical day on the Malaysia Airlines flight, which leaves KLIA at about 10:10 and lands in Male at about 11:25 local time. Maldives time is three hours behind Malaysia.

Allow up to an hour for immigration, bags and meeting the resort host. The host takes you to the domestic terminal, where you wait for the Kooddoo flight your resort has booked.

After about an hour in the air, you land at Kooddoo. Mercure guests ride a buggy to reception, while Pullman Maamutaa and The Residence guests take a speedboat of around 10 to 20 minutes. On a smooth day, most guests are in their villa by mid-afternoon.

On AirAsia, everything happens about 90 minutes earlier, which gives more choice of domestic flights.

A worked departure day

Both AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines leave Male around midday or early afternoon. To be safe, you need a domestic flight that lands at least three hours before departure.

That usually means a morning speedboat and an early flight from Kooddoo. Ask the resort for the departure time when you book, because it decides how much of your last morning you keep.

If the timing feels tight, a final night in Hulhumale gives you a relaxed last morning near the airport and removes the risk of a missed connection.

Who this route suits

The Kooddoo route suits travellers who want a remote resort with a short boat leg, and those who dislike long speedboat crossings. Mercure Kooddoo is the simplest arrival of any resort in the region.
