Where is Gaafu Dhaalu, and what is it like?

Gaafu Dhaalu is the southern half of Huvadhu, the vast natural atoll it shares with Gaafu Alifu. The government atoll portal lists it as its own administrative atoll, with Thinadhoo as the main town.

How do you get to Gaafu Dhaalu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo (KDM), about 3.7 km south of Thinadhoo. Ayada's official site gives about 55 minutes for the flight.

From the airport, resorts send a speedboat. Travel guides list about 15 minutes to NH Collection Havodda and 30 to 35 minutes to Outrigger Konotta; Ayada gives 25 to 50 minutes. More detail is in getting to Gaafu Dhaalu from Male airport.

Resorts in Gaafu Dhaalu

Ayada's site lists types from Garden Villa and Beach Villa with Pool to Sunset Ocean Suites and a Royal Ocean Suite. For the other resorts, confirm villa types and transfer times directly.

Some booking sites file The Residence or Raffles here, but those resorts are in Gaafu Alifu and use Kooddoo.

Surf, diving and marine life

The southern rim of Huvadhu is a surf area. Travel guides name breaks such as Blue Bowls and Tiger Stripes, with the best windows around February to May and September to November.

Divers find channel dives with strong currents, grey reef sharks and eagle rays, and mantas at cleaning stations. Visibility often exceeds 30 m in calm months, according to travel guides. Ask your resort dive centre which channels it visits.

Local islands

Gaafu Dhaalu has about ten inhabited islands. Thinadhoo is the busiest, with shops and services, while islands such as Gadhdhoo and Madaveli are smaller.

How long to stay

Four nights is the minimum, and five or more is better. The flight and boat take two to three hours door to door on each travel day.

Pick a domestic flight home that lands in Male at least three hours before your KLIA departure. Morning domestic flights pair well with midday AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines departures.

• Taxes: Green Tax USD 12 per guest per night at resorts, plus 17% Tourism GST and usually 10% service charge.
• Halal food: ask each resort in writing which outlets serve halal food.

Gaafu Dhaalu suits couples and families who want a quiet resort far from the crowds, and experienced surfers. It suits travellers happy to spend part of two days in transit.

Choose elsewhere for short trips, for nervous boat travellers, or for a budget local-island holiday, where Kaafu and Vaavu are far easier. If you want the shortest boat leg after the flight, look at Laamu or Gaafu Alifu. Confirm details when you book.
