Laamu atoll travel guide for Malaysians

You want a southern atoll with surf, mantas and very few resorts, and need to know how Laamu works with a flight from KLIA.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Laamu is a southern atoll reached by a domestic flight from Male to Kadhdhoo, then a short speedboat. It has very few resorts, led by Six Senses Laamu, plus a string of causeway-linked local islands. It suits surfers, couples and families who want a quiet resort with a strong marine conservation focus.

Where is Laamu, and what is it like?

Laamu sits in the south of the Maldives, below Thaa and above the two Huvadhu atolls. The government atoll portal lists it under its traditional name, Haddhunmathi.

It feels very different from the busy atolls around Male. There are only a handful of resorts and a long chain of local islands on the eastern rim, several of them joined by causeways. Start with our atolls and regions hub if you are still comparing regions.

How do you get to Laamu from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a domestic flight to Kadhdhoo Airport (KDO) and a short speedboat. Flight time is given as about 35 to 55 minutes, depending on the source and aircraft.

LegTypical timeNote
KLIA to MaleAbout 4h15 to 4h25AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines or Batik Air
Male to KadhdhooAbout 35 to 55 minMaldivian, scheduled flights

Domestic flights are not bound by the seaplane daylight rule, and flight-tracking data for mid-2026 shows some late evening departures from Male. Times change by season, so check the full routing in getting to Laamu from Male airport.

Where to stay in Laamu

Laamu has very few resorts, which is a large part of its appeal.

  • Six Senses Laamu: on Olhuveli island, with overwater and beach villas, a kids club, a clinic and a spa, according to Visit Maldives. Visit Maldives describes it as the only resort in the atoll.
  • Rahaa Resort: a four-star resort on a two-island cluster, listed by tour operators with a domestic flight and speedboat transfer. Visit Maldives does not yet list it, so confirm its status and inclusions when you enquire.
  • Local islands: Gan, Fonadhoo and nearby islands have small guesthouses listed on booking sites. We found no council or official tourism source for them.

The trade-offs are covered in Laamu local island versus resort.

Surf, reefs and marine life

Laamu is one of the better known surf atolls in the south. Yin Yang, a right-hand reef break, is visible from Six Senses Laamu, and travel guides put the season at roughly March to October.

Six Senses Laamu is also home to the Maldives Underwater Initiative, which works with the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation and Olive Ridley Project. Guests can join reef, manta and turtle programmes. Travel guides add dolphin trips and channel dives, but site lists vary, so ask the dive centre what it visits.

Local islands and culture

The eastern islands of Laamu are long and narrow, and several are linked by road causeways. Fonadhoo is described as the administrative centre and Gan as one of the longest islands in the country.

Isdhoo is known for its pre-Islamic ruins, and travel guides link it to the Loamaafaanu copper plates, among the oldest written records in the Maldives. Local-island rules apply: dress modestly away from bikini beaches, and there is no alcohol.

How long to stay, and a sample plan

Four nights is the sensible minimum. Five to seven nights works better for surfers and divers.

DayPlan
Day 1Land Male about 09:50 (AirAsia) or 11:25 (MH), domestic flight to Kadhdhoo, speedboat in
Days 2 to 4Snorkel, surf or dive, one marine programme, a local island visit
Last dayMorning speedboat and flight, connect to your KLIA flight

Leave at least three hours between a domestic arrival in Male and your international departure. Ask the resort which domestic flight it books you on.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Taxes: resort Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night; guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer charge USD 6. Tourism GST is 17%.
  • Halal food: ask the resort in writing which outlets serve halal food.
  • Luggage: domestic flights usually allow about 20 kg checked; confirm the allowance for surfboards.
  • Medical: Six Senses lists a clinic on site; serious cases go to Male.

Who Laamu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Laamu suits surfers, honeymooners who want a quiet island, and families who value conservation activities and a kids club. It also suits travellers who want to avoid the 15:30 seaplane cut-off by using a domestic flight.

Choose elsewhere if you want a cheap, well-reviewed local-island trip, where Kaafu or Vaavu are easier, or several resorts to compare in one atoll, where Gaafu Alifu offers more choice. Schedules and resort details change, so confirm before booking.

Questions travellers ask

Can I take a seaplane to Laamu?
Visit Maldives lists a direct seaplane as one option for Six Senses Laamu, alongside the usual domestic flight and speedboat. Most guests fly to Kadhdhoo because it is quicker and cheaper. If you prefer the seaplane, ask the resort for both prices and remember seaplanes only fly in daylight.
Is Laamu good for surfing?
Yes. Yin Yang, a right-hand reef break in view of Six Senses Laamu, is the atoll's best known wave, and travel guides give the surf season as roughly March to October. Ask the resort how sessions are booked and whether boards travel on the domestic flight with your luggage.
Is Laamu suitable for a Muslim family?
Local islands such as Gan and Fonadhoo are Muslim communities with mosques, and modest dress applies there. At a resort, ask in writing which restaurants serve halal food and whether prayer mats and qibla direction are available. Do not assume a resort is fully halal unless it says so.
How many nights should I spend in Laamu?
Plan at least four nights, and five to seven if you surf or dive. The domestic flight and boat take a few hours each way, so a three-night trip leaves little time on the island. A longer stay also absorbs any domestic flight delays.
