What is the standard route to Gaafu Dhaalu?

The standard route is a domestic flight from Velana to Kaadedhdhoo, followed by a resort speedboat. Seaplanes are not the normal way in.

Step by step on arrival day

1. Clear immigration at Velana and collect bags.
2. Meet the resort representative, who walks you to the domestic terminal (Ayada describes this service on its site).
3. Fly about 55 to 70 minutes to Kaadedhdhoo, next to Thinadhoo.
4. Board the resort speedboat for 15 to 50 minutes.

Allow about two to three hours from landing in Male to reaching your villa, depending on the wait for the domestic flight.

• Distance: this is one of the longest domestic routes from Male, so delays ripple through the day.
• Friday schedules: can be thinner; check early.
• Sea state: longer boat legs feel rougher in the southwest monsoon.
• Baggage: expect about 20 kg checked; surfboards and dive gear may cost extra.

A worked arrival day on AirAsia

The AirAsia flight leaves KLIA at about 08:35 and lands in Male at about 09:50 local time, three hours behind Malaysia. This is the easiest arrival for Gaafu Dhaalu because it leaves the most choice of domestic flights.

After immigration and meeting the resort host, you wait in the domestic terminal for the Kaadedhdhoo flight. The flight is about an hour, and the airport sits just south of Thinadhoo, the main town of the atoll.

From there the speedboat leg depends on your resort. Havodda guests are usually across in about 15 minutes, while Ayada guests should allow up to 50 minutes. Most guests arrive in the early to mid afternoon.

On Malaysia Airlines, add about 90 minutes to each step.

A worked departure day

The long transfer matters most on the way home. For a midday AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines departure, you may need a speedboat soon after breakfast or earlier.

Work backwards from your KLIA flight: three hours before departure in Male, minus the flight of about an hour, minus the boat of up to 50 minutes, minus waiting time at Kaadedhdhoo. For Ayada, that can easily mean leaving the island five to six hours before your international flight.

Families and anyone who hates early starts may find a final night in Hulhumale worth the cost.

The Kaadedhdhoo route suits travellers on morning KLIA arrivals who want a remote resort and do not mind a two-part journey. It suits surfers who arrange board carriage in advance.
